I didn't know whether to put this question in this forum or in diapering...

How frequently do any of you change a newborn at night? Up until last night, we were changing DS every time he woke up to nurse. But then he gets really upset during his diaper changes and cries and then I have to nurse him back down and it really interrupts the whole idea of trying to create a quiet environment at night. So last night, we only changed him twice. And this morning, when DH changed him, his diaper was apparently a disaster and there was poop dried to his bottom and now his bottom is all red, raw, and rashy looking

I definitely don't want him getting diaper rash, but I also want to keep nighttime as tranquil as possible. DH does night time diaper changes and I have tried to encourage him to do the changes in our bed rather than taking DS to the other room. But the one time DH did this, DS peed all over him and the bed and now DH refuses to change him in our bed (even though the pee issue is easily resolved by covering up DS's penis with a cloth during changes). So I'm thinking I should just keep a stash by me and do all the nighttime changes myself. Although, I also just figured out the side lying nursing thing last night... and it was wonderful because I was able to pop my boob in his mouth and we both drifted back to sleep. So, if we both go back to sleep, then I guess I have to wake up again after he's done to change him... which means waking him back up again????? Sheesh, this is complicated... I'm sure I'll get it down eventually.

How frequently do/did you change your newborn's diaper at night? (we are using BG 3.0 pockets if it makes any difference)

My ds is 3 months old and we've done this since he was about 6 days old...

Feed him, bathe (every other day or so) and change him into pj's. Some nights we read a story, then he nurses again to sleep, or goes int eh sling to sleep. This all happens anywhere ebtween 7 and 9:30. He wakes up around 11 and I *might* change him--depends whether I'm in bed already, nursing him, or still up and about, then I might. then he goes back to sleep & I don't change him again until we get up int he morning. And usually I nurse him first, right before Ileave for work at 7-ish. He has never had diaper rash. I *do* load him up with diaper cream on that l;ast change at night, though lol

eta: I guess I didn't read carefully....my ds never really pooped at night that much...maybe a few times in the beginning, but after a few days of leaking we switched diaper brands and around that time he quit pooping at night. didn't want you to think i'm suggesting they go 12 hours in a poopy diaper!!! ew...

My little one is two months old today, and most nights now, she doesn't poop! I've been putting her in a diaper that will hold her all night, then have a few backups on hand of a similar stuffin' or slightly less, just in case she needs a change.

If she's waking a lot, then I'll change her once (she pees when she sleeps restlessly). If I hear her poop, I change her. If she is grunting and not really nursing, I take her to the bathroom, take off her diaper, let her poop in the toilet, then put a clean diaper back on.

I keep a waterproof mat on the mattress under her, and change her on this. I'll often put a prefold down under her bum when I'm changing a known-poopy diaper. I use a headlamp to change her, rather than turning on a bright light.

I usually have to get out of bed before her (early-waking toddler and late-sleeping baby!), so when I hear her wake I take her to the potty first, then a clean diaper, nurse, potty again. On nights when she sleeps well, her diaper isn't really that saturated by morning.

Sorry about the sore bum!

I change poopy diapers as soon as they happen, she usually wakes up to poo and I sniff her bum alot. I let her go all night in wet diapers.

My littlest is 5 mo. The pooping at night stinks for all involved I think. I couldn't wait till he stopped. I just keep/kept a few diapers next to the bed and if I heard him poop I'd change him. Other wise I left him be. When I was still changing him at night I kept the lighting as low as possible and tried not to speak or do anything "stimulating".
Hang in there

I'll change the poops, but not the wet ones. My ds gets so upset with mid-night diaper changes. We use a very absorbent inner diaper with a fleece topper so his skin stays dry. He also gets nakey time when he first gets up, to make sure he's well dried before starting the day. No rashes for us now that we've figured all that out. The fleece was the key.

When he was a newborn, I changed him when he pooped - which was often! If it was just wet, I left it be until morning. If I had to change him, I kept the light very, very low, and did everything very gently and very quietly to avoid really waking him.

Once he stopped pooping at night, I stopped changing him at night. I just make sure his diaper is as absorbent as it can be because by morning he is SOAKED. Then I take his diaper off when he wakes and let him have some naked time to really dry everything out. He's 4.5 months and no diaper rash yet.

I do this too, although if her diaper feels really wet, I change it. I've gotten so I'm able to change a diaper in the dark. My dd is pretty good about going right back to sleep, and only cries if I change her when she's hungry. I use a good diaper ointment every night at bedtime to kind of protect her skin from the moisture during the night. I use MotherLove Diaper Rash ointment. It's excellent. The Nipple Cream works just as well, and if you're careful about avoiding cross-contamination butt to boobs, it's a good way to kill two birds with one stone!

We use the bum genius 3.0 at night and with dd they don’t leak at all (or haven’t yet). DD only poops when awake and she’s loud and fussy so we know when she’s going so we always change after a poo (that is if you know it happened). DD goes to bed about 7pm and sometimes I’ll change her halfway through the night if she’s awake or if I think her diaper is super full. Though other nights she gets changed when she wakes at 7am. I know that seems like a long time but no rash yet! I do try at least once a night (in bed, I keep the wipes and diapers nearby) so it goes quickly and we can both get back to bed. Having pj’s that give easy access too helps along with a nightlight.

Up until 2 months, I changed him once at night. Now doesn't poop at night, so I don't change him at all until morning.

Maybe you could change him when he wakes up, and then nurse to sleep. I'd really hate to wake up a baby that just happily drifted into sleep.

I was lucky that DD didn't really poop during the night as a newborn, so changing diapers didn't happen that often.

But, I would also feel her diaper to see how full it was, if she peed a loooot during the night then I might change her in the middle of the night. Still do.

Congratulations on making your life a thousand times easier by figuring out the side lying nursing thing!!! It will change your life!!! And yeah, Mamma, you'll get it down eventually.

Until DD was 2 month I was changing her once or twice at night when she woke up to nurse.
Now, I don't change her anymore at night. We put her to sleep around 9PM and she wakes up around 7AM. The first thing she does when waking up is pooping. So I change her the first thing in the morning. We use prefolds and I add an additional layer over night.

We use Bum Genius too and I never change diapers at night unless there is poop involved. You can make the BGs as absorbent as they need to be to hold in all the pee, and I feel like their bum is still protected because of the pocket design. As for the poop, it doesn't happen very often, but when it does I can always tell (it sounds different than gas, as you have probably learned!).

We use two prefolds at night, and have seldom had to change during the night. DD has really only pooped at night once or twice, and now (12 mo.) is often dry in the morning, also.

During the first few months she would sometimes be pretty wet by morning, but that never seemed to bother her as much as changing a diaper at night would.

my lo rarely poops at night more often he will poop in the early morning or once he wakes fully

we do change him every time he pees unless he is sleeping very lightly. i nurse side lying and dp changes diaper at same time. we do ec (but not at night cuz lo cries a lot when we tried) and use an ec belt to hold a prefold on so it is very easy and fast to change and lo sleeps through it or seems to. also lo and i sleep on a towel or extra blanket to protect the bed in case dp doesn't do a good job with diaper (then lo pees out the side) our bed is fine and lo doesn't get a rash this way. normaly if he is in a wet diaper for more than 5 or 10 minutes he has the beggining of a rash

I also only change poopies at night, and Faith rarely poops at night anymore. (She's 4 months on Saturday.)

But I also slather on the Earth Mama Angel Baby diaper ointment at night. We use Fuzzi Bunz and have not had a leak yet.
