Good afternoon everyone. I just stumbled acorss this site and was hoping for some suggestions. My daughter just turned 8 and is still struggling with staying dry at night. After talking with her dr numerous times I was advised that with some kids its something that they will outgrow in time. In the mean time I am looking for something she could wear to bed. Surprisingly, my daughter is the one begging to wear something to bed because she hates waking up in a wet bed every morning. I have, in the past tried pull ups and goodnites as well as those new underjams. The work some of the time and the other times they tend to leak and she came to me in the morning in tears. I always used disposable with her but since I am unable to find anything suitable for her, I thought maybe a cloth option was available. She is aprox 55-60 lbs. I dont mind washing sheets and I will with no problem till she stops because I know its not her fault but as I stated before, she is begging me to find her something to wear to bed. What brought me here today was when I woke her up in the morning not too long ago and was taken back at what she did. She actually stole one of my sisters sons diapers and tried (unsuccessfully) to wear it to bed. I felt so bad for her and didnt confront her about it, I just pretended not to notice and walked out of the room. So if anyone has any suggestions I would really really appreciate it and so would my daughter. Thank you for your time.

I am sure that if you are at all crafty you could probably take a cloth diaper pattern and adjust it using a pair of her underwear as sizing... There may also be some mamas out there that have made this sort of thing. I hope you are able to find a solution that works for her!!!!

I tried making some for my friend's kids who are 6 & 7 with the same issue - I a little trouble getting enough absorbancy. A big kid has a big bladder that holds a lot - and thus pees a lot! I was thinking of trying hemp for my friend because it's really absorbant.

I made her a pocket type diaper (well, for the kids) with snaps on the sides and an opening in the front waist seem though which you slide an absorbant insert - having the "undies" in two pieces like this (the shell and then an absorbant insert) helps it to wash and dry better. I made her inserts with microfiber and I tried this new stuff, zorb, which I felt was a waste of time. I'm going to try some inserts for her with microfiber and hemp, because I think they hold more pee.

If you can sew, try going to zanyzebra - they have some free patterns there that you could probably modify for a bigger size.

There are also some brands of cloth diapers that sell a bigger size training pants, like TinyTush. I haven't had need to try them, so no personal experience yet.

Or you could find another Mama to sew some custom ones for you.

Thanks foot....I would love to be able to make her something like that but I cant sew to save my life! lol I dont even own a sewing machine. I am hoping that this isnt taking a step backwards and letting her have what she wants. I just dont want her to become dependent on them like she did with the pull ups when I was getting them before. I hated it when I would catch her up walking around in the morning still in a soaking wet pull up. Most of the time it would be almost sagging to her knees and she didnt have a care in the world. She would just wet in the pull up because she felt hey...I got a pull up on, I dont have to go to the bathroom! She has even admitted it when I asked her after it leaked all over the kitchen table chair. I was flabbergasted! So, I do have concerns about going back to diapers but on the other hand, I really dont want to be washing sheets every morning either. You know what I mean? Where do I draw the line? Do I give in or keep trying different things hoping to find something that works? Thank you!

Hey BriannasMommy,
Just had a thought. I'm certainly no parenting expert, but I had some friends (diffrent ones than I mentioned before) who simply taught their kids to change their own sheets because they wanted them to take responsibility for it. I would think 8 might be old enough to do that. You could maybe put two sets of sheets on with a matress pad, so if she wets, she can jsut strip off the wet ones, put them in an appropriate place, and go back to sleep. I guess you're still stuck with laundry, but I guess she has some reponsibility then. I don't know. It's a tough thing, I imagine, to know how to handle it. I get what you mean about not wanting her to be too dependent on the dipes.

I've always wondered if timed waking would work. If, for example, she generally goes to sleep at 8 and stays dry until 12 - what if you go wake her up and have her go pee. Then her body would get used to it, and you gradually wake her up later and later to train her bladder to hold it until her "scheduled" wake-up time. Again, I'm no expert, I've just always been curious about that.
