Hi. We're planning on nightweaning our 17 month old either now or in 2 months after a planned overseas trip. We're set on the decision, although we're still deciding when would be best. What I'm wondering though, is while we're doing this, should I leave the room and sleep on the couch? I've heard of moms doing this and leaving the kid with DH, but I'm afraid that he'll think that I'm not just taking away his night nursies, but also mama altogether. Anyone have any experience with either of these options, or any advise?

TIA

I would definitely wait until after the trip. Your baby might really need some extra comforting when his world literally turns upside down and the best way to do that (at least with my kids) is to nurse.

I'm pretty certain you can find some good information on how to gently night-wean at Dr. Sears' website or at Kellymom.
http://www.askdrsears.com/html/7/t070800.asp

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/weaning/weaning-night.html

Remember that sleeping through the night is a developmental milestone (like walking or toilet training) that different babies will reach at different times. At some point, your child will sleep through the night - even if you do nothing to encourage it.

If night weaning is not going well, then consider backing off and trying again a little later. The closer your child is to reaching this milestone on his own, the easier it will be for both child and parents.

Thanks. It's nice to be reminded that we should wait until after the trip. It was our original plan, and it's my instinct, but this past week has been so rough that we started to think about doing it sooner. I'm pretty sure we'll wait for another couple of months. He's been seeming like he's ready for it, as he's been taking comfort from his DH more and more at night, and sometimes asks for his cup, and generally seems really bummed to be awake at all. I'll check out the sites too, as we get closer. I really want to do this will a lot of thought and love and planning.
