Ken Schram often does opinion commentary on KOMO news, and they post the text on their website.

Today he discussed the nurse-in at ABC after Barbara Walters' comment about NIP. (Link)

There's a link in the article to send him your thoughts.
:

I'm so disappointed in his stance that I don't even know how to begin phrasing an email to him.

I guess I just want to "pop it out" and start letting Johnn AND Suzy start suckling. :tandem

I hope he gets lots of response... I had no idea that in Seattle of all places there were media members so uninformed. I sent a note to Kathi Goertzen, too, who apparently siad something to the effect of "get over it" in response to him, and may have even referred to him as an idiot.

Nurse in, anyone?

I just got this in my e-mail - lets organize something ladies!

Subject: breast feeding outcry

I am a breastfeeding mom in the Seattle area filled with rage over Ken
Shram's (of ABC's local affiliate KOMO TV) editorial equating
breastfeeding in public to public urination. Can any of you help direct
me to a group planning a protest/boycott/ or "nurse-in" to demonstrate
that those sentiments will not be tolerataed? Our community cannot let
this outrage go unanswered!

Thank you for your help,

Tia Keenan RN, BSN, mom of two breastfed children

She sure did. She said "Get over it, Schram. What an idiot."

I'm ready to show up at a Nurse-In
I have no funds to buy signs or anything but I have two nurslings and a full tank of gas. I also have a 4 year old who might nurse if asked...for the cause.

There is an LLL meeting for Seattle - North on Friday if there is one organized soon. Visiting that meeting would be a way to get the word out.

here's what I said to her:

subject: Support for your comments re: Schram

I just wanted to drop a note saying "THANK YOU!" for the comments you made following Ken Schram's editorial on covering up while breastfeeding in public.

I realize they were likely just a visceral reaction (I had the same while watching) but it makes a HUGE difference to mothers out there who may be feeling increasingly persecuted while simply trying to do what nature has intended, feed their children.

With breastfeeding rates in this country some of the lowest in the world and the costs of health care for those formula-fed infants skyrocketing, every seemingly little comment made by those with public sway makes a difference, whether for good or bad.

Would you consider doing a more in-depth piece on the benefits of breastfeeding not only to the mother and child but all of society?

Keep up the great work!

How about Monday June 13th? Would the time matter? I guess they work all day, don't they?
And I've never been to the news station. Is there ample area at the front entrance for moms with toddlers to hang out without them being in danger?
It's on 4th.

My reply:

"...for guys, it is nigh on impossible to switch from breasts as something sexual to breasts as take-out-food."

Well, I'm not sure that your Freudian fixation is my problem, Ken. Believe it or not, it is YOUR responsibility not to leer at, harass, intimidate or shame somebody who is breast-feeding, regardless of your personal issues. Human beings pee in the bathroom and eat anywhere that food is permitted (restaurants, airplanes, park benches etc.) I'm not inclined to plan my entire day around your neuroses.

By the way, my experience nursing my son in public here in the Seattle area was overwhelmingly positive. If you yearn for a society with draconian nudity taboos, I'd suggest Alabama.

I sent in my comments and asked for a retraction and apology. I think we need to organize the nurse in. I would suggest having it in the late afternoon so a WOH mom (like me) would only have to take off a bit early and not the whole day.

Anyone in the Marysville area willing to pick us up? I am on crutches and can't drive, but I couldn't bear to miss this. I'll pay for gas!
