NIP thoughts

Hi I'm a new member, but I've been lurking a while.
With all the Problems women get with nursing in public I've been doing alot of thinking and I'd like to know if I'm the only that has had these realizations.

Men and women both have breasts, the difference being ONLY that they develope differently. So why is it a man can go topless, but a woman can't? (in most cases) Which makes me wonder if a flat chested woman (not child) wanted to go topless at Waterworld or something, would everyone be offended even though she doesn't have developed breasts? What about men that are a little heavy in the chest department, should they be forced to cover up? Basically I think all this being offended with NIP is just a sex discrimination problem. Sort of like people are saying "Women are seen as sexual objects and therefore we should stay that way."

I seriously think that before we can truly get anywhere with the whole NIP thing we need to get people to see that breasts aren't just sexual, until then we can make all the laws we want, but it won't change the image.

What about the whole perversion point of view? I think it's the people that are offended who have a perverted POV because they are seeing a woman's breasts as sexual.
Well these are just some of my random thoughts, sorry if they don't make much sense.

Hi! I think you'll get a lot of agreement around here. Breasts are overly sexualized in the U.S., and it causes problems with NIPing. I've always thought the prohibition on naked female breasts in public was stupid anyway. Call me an idealist, but women oughta be allowed to go topless just like men, or a law should be passed that prohibits the showing of male nipples. I mean, let's be fair! Of course, I would prefer the first option...

I don't know what it's going to take to desexualize breasts here. A whole major paradigm shift doesn't happen overnight.

You'll find lots of good reading on this topic at

Topfree Equal Rights Association
http://www.tera.ca/

I didn't know much about this movement, until I was co-speaker at a breastfeeding conference, with Dr. Paul Rappoport, who is Co-ordinator.

Honestly, at first I didn't want breastfeeding advocacy to be associated with this group (they were too "out there") but after his talk, I realized that he was right - we will have a hard time getting completely over NIP, until women are able to go topfree.

TERA is a big supporter of NIP.

DF and I were just having a conversation about this at dinner this evening. Why is it taboo for women, who need access to their breasts to feed children, to go topless, yet men, who do not need the same access, can run around with no shirt on? I just don't get it.

Because men are propietary about their womenfolk, and durn it, she needs to keep her top on and those boobies covered so no other menfolk can see 'em and want 'em!

I think you are right on, sexualization of breasts is so ingrained in our culture that it feels "normal" to many people to think of women's breasts only in sexual terms. You might find www.007b.com an interesting site too.

Recently at a water park I saw a boy that couldn't have been older than 12, with breasts that were at least a B cup! Had he been a female he would have been arrested for indecent exposure.

I was just climbing onto my soap box about this at a picnic yesterday, when my mother was trying to cover me up!
:

I glanced over at my little sister who is running around in a haltertop that seriously barely covers her nipples and absolutely nothing else! So I asked my mother to look at my sister and tell me why it's ok for her top to "sort of" cover her breasts, but my ds's head can't cover up that much nipple or more? Of course I didn't get an answer, and I realized that our world is totally fine with breasts as decoration, and a woman can parade about in almost nothing, but a woman who is feeding her child is indecent! AURGH!

There were a bunch of teenage girls sitting with us, so I tried to stress that breasts are for our babies, not toys or decorations. Most of them thought I was crazy. Oh well, I tried.

OMG, exactly! We expect our little girls and pre-pubescents to run around wearing "porn star" shirts and hot pants with slogans across the butt, but mature adult women can't expose a bit of boob to feed a baby?
Ugh, don't get me started on the female clothing options of today...
