Hi! For the past week, my right nipple has become very sensitive while nursing. DS is 5 months old and exclusively breastfed. I have no pain on the left side. At first I thought it was because he has 2 bottom teeth, but it seems weird that the teeth would scrape on only one side. The nipple is also bright red, and there is a dry, raw sensation. Is it possible to get thrush on only one side? Does anyone have any other ideas of what might be causing this pain? Thanks!

I don't have an idea what might be the problem, but I just wanted to say that I've had several questions/problems with breastfeeding and I got great help from La Leche league women. I looked on their website and called my local rep and she was soooo great... helped me work through questions. I'd suggest them if you don't get any ideas off here.

I've had this problem a couple of times and both times I ended up geting a cut on my nipple (more like a hole actually.) I found my ds's teeth scraped on my nipple, often only on one side. He favors the left side and is not as comfortable on the right, and it was on the right that I had problems. I unlatched him EVERY time it hurt. Tried changing postions so his teeth pointed away from the red spot. It ended up getting better when I got about 5-6 hours without him nursing on that side so I could heal up enough that it didn't open back up every time he ate.

I realize that you don't have an opening, but it sounds like how I felt just before I got an opening in my nipple.

I don't know if it's what you have, but it is possible to get thrush on just one side, which I found out for myself! I know in the early days when we started nursing, I had problems on one side when holding DS in cradle hold. For some reason, it would hurt terribly when he nursed. If I nursed him in football hold on that side, or else side-lying, the pain would not be as bad, and when we switched totally to football or side lying on that side, the pain basically went away. Until we got thrush, when he was 18mos, again, one side only! Same side as all the problems from the early days!
