: My nipples- esp the left- are soo sore! I thought that working on the latch would help and it did make the right side feel much better most of the time. The left side hurts so much I almost can't bear latching him on. Once he's on it isn't so bad and the right side has no pain once we're latched. But after he's done, they are soo painful. TCOF book says that frequent nursing will help get rid of sore nipples. Is this true? I Bf dd for 4 months and gave up b/c I was sick and it was still painful alot of the time. Ds is 3 weeks 4 days. He was treated for thrush on Thursday and I was given some ointment to put on my nipples for it. Will that help get rid of the pain? I have looked for a lactation consultant but haven't found one that doesn't require a long distance call. I don't know that calling will help anyway. Help!

you said your babe was treated for thrush on thursday, and that was only 2 days ago. BOTH of you should be treated for thrush, as it passes back and forth very easily. what treatment was your babe given? two of the most effective treatments for thrush for mama and baby are gentian violet (usually takes 3-5 days of treatment, see www.drjacknewman.com) or liquid citricidial grapefruit seed extract (usually takes 2-5 days of treatment, see www.drjaygordon.com). the nipple pain could very well be from thrush in your breast. can you describe the pain a little more? is it a burning pain? like grating glass on your nipples? like a deep shooting pain into your breast? does it hurt at latch on and get more intense as nursing goes on? does it hurt more in the afternoon or evening when your milk supply is lower and baby has to work a little more for the milk? any of those types of pain (as well as other descriptions) and symptoms of pain are ones i've heard that were thrush-related.

the dr. jack newman website also has an extensive protocol and recommended actions list for how to treat thrush most effectively, i.e. eliminate refined sugars and white flour and baked goods, wash your nursing bras and any clothing that comes in direct contact with your nipples in hot water on a daily basis, etc.

I was watching for thrush b/c I had antibiotics at delivery so we caught it early the dr said. He had his mouth painted with genetian violet and I have Nystatin cream to apply to the nipples. The pain is burning when he isn't nursing. Latch on is like having glass shards driven into you. The pain seems to get more bearable as he feeds. It seems worse in the evening. Right now he's feeding for anywhere from 5 -30 minutes every hour. At night he goes 2-4 hrs between feedings. The dr said one painting should take care of it- he had just small patches on his inner lips and a little on the gums. I have bright red nips with little red spots around them. The spots are gone the nipples are just red now. Would cloth breast pads for leakage help? (I'm usind diposable ones)

hmmm... you might try another painting with the gentian violet. it took us at least 2 days of painting with it for me to feel some relief and almost a full 5 days of the painting (just once a day, though) for me to be pain-free at nursing.

you might consider sticking with the disposable breast pads right now and replace them with fresh ones at least once a day if not more so the candida yeast doesn't stick around and get reintroduced. and if you can, go around shirtless or at least loose shirted for as much of the day and night as possible to get air circulation around there as much as you can.

keep us updated as you can...

more pain-free nursing vibes coming to you...
