I am 38wks pg and at my visit yesterday my OB suggested we "ML until the cows come home" and that I start doing nipple stimulation for 30 minutes a day in order to get my cervix ripe. I am clear about how to ML until the cows come home , but I was wondering if someone could give me some pointers on the nipple stimulation. The OB said that I really want to simulate breastfeeding. He talked about rolling and pulling (I think). My 2.5yo is still nursing a little, but at most for a minute at bed time. Also, her latch is all messed up these days so I don't think that it would help at all.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

do you have a pump? that's probably the best way to go--15 mins, rest, then 15 more on the other side. Otherwise, look at jack newman's site for manual expression--finger and thumb on either side of areola, push back toward the chest wall then roll toward the nipple. again, I think you have to do it continuously for an extended period--not just on and off. good luck!!!!!

Hey there-

I just wanted to say that for my second child nipple stimulation was like an on/off switch for labor. I was in transition (I think- vomiting, etc) and then hopped in the car to head to the midwives when everything just stopped. Once I got there they suggested ns to get things going again. I couldn't do it with anyone in the room, so they left dp and I alone and I swear it was an on/off switch for me and I could totally control the contractions. When I was ready to push I said the mw and nurse could come back in. It was so cool!

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I do have a pump, but I hate it, so I will check out that site for manual expression. My dr suggested doing it for 30 minutes a day, going 5 minutes on a side and then switching to the other side for 5 minutes, etc.
