I did find his blog interesting, but I didn't think he gave enough info on what he was actually doing, just kinda talking about his thoughts and experience. I woudl think if he wants to make a difference by influencing others, he should have a blog post on each 'rule' and the reasons he's doing it, talking about the effects, etc. I read all his blog posts and didn't really feel like I knew what specific changes he was making - it was much more general. I would have loved to have read for example, how he determined which foods were local, his process of finding those foods, etc.

It does help to see someone extreme to make me realize I'm not doing everything I could be doing even without much sacrifice.

whitedoyle--he does point out that this is an "experiment" and that it would be an extreme way to live; some aspects of it are unnecessary, like walking here in nyc when there are trains running every 5 minutes with or without him!

But like mightymoo said, i find it inspiring.

I got the impression that the blog was maybe an after thought? It does seem to be missing a bunch of basic things. I guess he's saving it for the book....(which will be printed on tyvec.)

Yeah must have been, he didn't start it until 3 months after they began, so...

I wish he'd fill me in on why tyvek is better? It doesn't seem like an earth friendly product to me, but I guess I don't know anything about it!

I looked at the site a week or so ago so there may have been some changes since then...
But in some ways they are not extreme. I mean, hello! They have a maid? I'd be curious to know what products she is using. Also, they are using a washing machine and dryer. They cloth diaper their daughter so why not use family cloth? Those were a couple things I thought odd.

I read an article in the newspaper, and it mentioned that the guests avoided using the bathroom because there was no toilet paper, so I assumed they were using family cloth. It also said the washer and dryer was in the apartment building, and that they didn't have the heart to take away the vacuum cleaner from the maid, but that they had already taken away paper towels from her.

They're not perfect, it's a journey for them, as it is for all of us. I think their extremeness is coming from a total mainstream mentality and changing that. They are making many(but not all!) uncomfortable sacrifices. The whole US society is about having all the comforts, so it is extreme when people give up a lot of them. But if he gets enough press, it'll make other people think about what they can do.

I mean, I know someone even more extreme, in that he lives on one of those anti whaling ships that goes and rams whalers.
