Another story which I'm surprised hasn't been posted yet, about advances in the development of a universal flu vaccine

http://www.theguardian.com/science/...closer-as-scientists-create-experimental-jabs

Sarcasm alert: Did these researchers not get the memo that only research which increases the number of vaccines is allowed? They seem to be trying to make it so that annual flu vaccines would no longer be recommended….. Couldn't possibly be the case they just want to help save lives could it?

Absolutely right. This one story proves that there is absolutely no greed anywhere in the vaccine program from top to bottom and around the globe. What a relief!

Quite frankly, I will be surprised if a universal flu vaccine makes it to market in all areas. I expect a lot of push back from pharmaceutical companies, and if the government goes for it (it is the government who regulates these things after all) it will be because it works better than the yearly vaccine and because one vaccine costs the government less than yearly vaccines.

ETA: if the universal flu vaccine makes it to market and has better efficacy, then I am happy for all those who want it. Less turning oneself into a pin cushion, and less trips to the doctor or clinic - which will decrease the amount of flu in and of itself :) Clinics with masses of people in them, often sick people, are petrie dishes of germs.

You surprise me by your change of heart. I don't let single articles sway my opinion so quickly.... I prefer to wait for a large body of evidence to build. :)

So you are waiting for evidence around profitability of vaccines and the influence of money on mandates and so on? Easy to find, just read the business press.

Many people are hard core followers of the vaccine schedule, yet they skip the flu shot.
Maybe the idea here is to make a vaccine so good ( 12% efficiency is not that high of a bar) that the vaccine gets put into the schedule.

it IS on the schedule for children in some states, mandated by the state as well as all other vaccines.

I've read them. And what they say to me is that vaccines are a tiny part of the profits of pharmaceutical companies. Dwarfed by drugs for heart disease, even viagra!

I've posted this before on MDC:

This article: http://www.jhsph.edu/news/magazine/archive/Mag_Fall02/vaccines.html
from John's Hopkins (about vaccine shortages) claims:

Quote:
Vaccines are dramatically less profitable than other drugs. In March, Science reported that GlaxoSmithKline, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, enjoyed worldwide vaccine sales of $4.3 billion. Contrast that figure with the profits of one drug, the cholesterol-lowering Lipitor, which grosses $6 billion a year. According to IMS Health, a pharmaceutical intelligence service, vaccines comprise only 1 to 2 percent of global pharmaceutical sales.

I feel a lot like Sisyphus with some of these little pro-vaccine concepts that come up over and over again. @prosciencemum wrote:

This bit of nonsense was extensively discussed on another thread. It is the equivalent of saying that skyscrapers are a small part of the overall construction market in the world, therefore no construction company would ever bribe a local official in order to get the contract to build a skyscraper.

Obviously, for companies who produce vaccines, they are usually quite a significant part of their business. Vaccines have several advantages. In the US the companies don't have to worry about lawsuits. There is a very faint chance of being sued...probably equivalent to the chance of a live volcano erupting under one of their manufacturing plants. Vaccines are pushed and sometimes mandated by governments and big health agencies, financed by organizations like GAVI, are not easily replaced by generic versions and provide a very steady cash flow, year after year.
