well, a few days ago i thought we were going to have to return to bare-bum time since dd would try to undress herself rather than call me to go to the potty, and she would usually miss in the process. but lately i have noticed that she is able to take off her underpants and sit on the BBLP all by herself. in fact today she wouldn't even let me assist her.

looks like our communication is down to her announcing 'bottom wash!' when she's finished. is this the beginning of the end (of ec)?

that's pretty much how it went with Benny (now 5) It seemed like one moment I was kveching about how he'd never tell me if he needed to go and the next I was finding full potties around the house. I don't know if he'd ever have asked for a "bottom wash" since boys don't really need it and poos were obvious, since he'd bring the potty in front of the tv and sit a spell

I think one of the things that I love most about EC is how it's this gentle continuum where you suddenly realize it's over and you hadn't quite noticed.

i think 'bottom wash' is just something she thinks of as part of the routine. sometimes i will wander over several minutes after she is done with the potty and already immersed in some other activity, and when i offer to put her pants back on, she will mutter, 'bottom wash.' she never forgets, so i decided not to explain that it was optional in case of 'wet' only .... somehow thought that would throw off her understanding of the system.

but this habit of providing entertainment at the potty... looks like that has also become part of the routine, now! dd will announce that she needs to go to potty, then select a book to take with her! then she usually needs somene to help her either hold the book or pull down her pants :LOL

so is your 5 yr old on the regular toilet or a potty? i am not sure how long we get away with using the bblp and when dd will be ready to use the 'big' toilet.

i am also curious - do parents of regular PL kids carry around potties? I thnk i am the only one doing this!

This question was not for me, but I'll answer anyway for my 4 year old. He had a seat that fit over the toilet with a step and two handles to hold onto (sad they don't make it anymore) which he started to use shortly after he turned 2. He still used his bblp. At 2/12 we took a 2 month trip and did not take the either potty with us. When we got back, he used the step potty seat for a little while longer but then the step got a crack in it and we took a long time to fix it. Actaully I think we fixed it and it broke right away again. We keep a stool in the bathroom he puts in front of the toilet to get up on it. He is on the smaller side of the growth charts. We also kept a bblp in the bathroom forever mostly because we only have one toilet in the house and it was there for anyone to use if someone was on the toilet already and they couldn't wait.

Yes we kept a potty in the car for longer ventures. But most handy of all was carrying around a cup (the plastic stacking toy kind) which my DS pees in. We used it everywhere (including airports) until his ability to know long ahead of time and holding back skills meant we could make it to a toilet wherever we were. Actually he still uses the cup to pee in at bedtime.

Thanks for letting me butt in.
