yiiiiikes

didn't sleep very well last night and as such was napping on and off all day today ... woke up for good about 4pm when i realized i hadn't felt him today, the way i usually do. he's generally very active two or three times a day, usually after a meal, with other random flutterings or kicks thrown in for good measure. but i haven't felt any of that today. just a few sort of bubbles or something which could easily be GI-related.

called the MW on-call service at 5. she returned my call at 6, telling me that i should drink a quart of very cold ice water and lie down for an hour on my left side. if after an hour, no change, i am to report to L&D "to play", as she put it.
i would f*ing KILL for a stethoscope or a hand doppler right now. no way i want to go to the hospital if i'm not even in labor! part of me says chill out, mama, he's fine, he's just having a mellow day ... the other part of me is freaking out.

will update when i know anything.

I have heard that you can use an empty toilet paper roll to hear fetal heartbeats, kind of like a fetalscope. It's going to be a very faint tapping, though. You also have to sort of know what position he is in. Maybe it will work?

boy, do I feel dumb!!

He's OK, he's OK. My paranoid mommy feelings are just ripening, I guess. I'm gonna be a WRECK when he starts school!

I called the mW practice around 6pm yesterday, and the mw on call told me to drink a quart of very cold water and lie down for an hour, and to call back if there was no change. There was no change. She told me to come into L&D for a non-stress test. Called dh and he came to pick me up around 7:30; we got to the hospital around 8 or so. The admitting nurse said, "OK, let's get you in a room and you'll either be going home in a couple of hours, or you'll be in labor!"

They strapped me to an EFT, and as soon as the doppler lead went on, I heard the most comforting sound I've ever heard, the swoosh-swoosh of his heart in there, still going strong. The nurse took a strip for about 10 minutes, and told us he was "textbook". (dh really liked that - omg he was a MESS yesterday!)

So the mw on call came in and took a look at my strip and asked a bunch of questions, then decided that since we were here and it wasn't busy, she was going to send us downstairs for a quick u/s to check fluid levels. I could have easily gone home at this point, but dh wanted to see it all through, so we waited another hour or so until the ultrasound room was ready for us. The tech was hilarious ("Look at the BALLS on this guy!") but in the end she just upset me, since she decided my dates were wrong. According to her (notoriously unreliable) calculations, I'm not 38+5, I'm 36+3 - and he already weighs 6lbs10oz!!!
: She said I might not be due until 9/2!
:

Back upstairs, as we were leaving, my mw told me not to get upset over what the u/s tech thought - they were still going by my edd of 8/18, and external measurements put me right at 38wks. I started apologizing to everyone - I felt like such an ASS for dragging dh out of work and going all the way to the hospital for what turned out to be nothing. However, the mw took me by the shoulders and said, "Look. You did the right thing. Don't hesitate to call us if you feel like anything is up, ok?" I still felt sheepish, but dh took us for chinese food and we went home to bed much reassured.

Yeah, I still feel totally stupid.

Oh yes, and the other fascinating part: The other lead on the eft measures contractions. I saw mine, and they're pretty minor
. The nurse had two other patients on the floor, and their strips were present on the monitor in my room, so I could compare what my contractions and FHR looked like with the women on the floor who were actually in labor. OMG.
___n____n____n___ is what my contraction strip looked like.
The other two? __/--\___/--\___/--\__
(ascii doesn't do it justice, but suffice it to say they looked dramatic and scary and much, much bigger!)

Whew, I am glad to hear everything is A-okay! Also, ultrasounds get less and less reliable for dates the further along you are, correct? So, I wouldn't worry about her new calculation for you.
