Just found out that the Ministry of Education of Quebec refuses to grant loans, even for graduate students, if they have previous loans. The requirement is that the previous loan has to be at least 50% paid off, which mine isn't, in order to obtain anything else. The only thing they can do for me is to freeze the interest on the loan for the duration of my schooling; they need to receive proof of full-time student status from my university in order for that to happen.

So, boo. I won't be able to rely on student loans from the government to give me any kind of help. At least I won't be 45$ interest on my debt every month. Still, boo.

I don't think so, but I'll check again. My university is an online university, so the bursaries they offer are very low...as in 500$ to 1000$. That doesn't get me very far, but it's better than a kick in the @ss.

It's not the right time of the year to look for bursaries. I think the big rush is right before the fall semester, so I'll look again at the end of the summer.

I'm kind of bummed though.

SSM...I have about 17K saved up right now, and it should cost me about 3K to complete the Masters' degree (as I said, online university = cheap, but no services). I think I'll be ok though I might be really tight in the end, especially with DD's daycare cost being so high. Maybe I can figure out how to fit in a PT job... I'll just be very frugal on all other expenses. I just can't compromise on having a cell phone (though I'll cut out all data), and getting a cheap gym membership, to avoid getting cabin fever.

Colour me...flabbergasted.

I got an email from the Ministry today. Checked my file online and discovered that they're granting me a 1,700$ loan for the May to August period.

What?

Huh?

I'm a bit confuzzled at this point, but, hey...gift horse ...mouth...not me.

And this may mean that I'll be able to get bursaries for the next period (September 2012 to August 2013). YAY!

That's awesome. One time I got denied a grant here because someone had left a sticky note on the outside of my folder saying I didn't qualify - I hadn't qualified the semester before but was due to qualify the next. Financial aid offices are disorganized.
