or so it would seem, according to PETA activist Dan Mathews, author of the new book 'Committed: A Rabble-Rouser's Memoir'.

http://content.hamptonroads.com/stor...843&ran=163009

'Few subjects rile such instantaneous passion, such hard-line admiration and mockery. There's politics, there's religion and then there's PETA. (edit. And circumcision!)

Even its fiercest critics have to grant, however, that as a brand, PETA is an unqualified success. In just 27 years, a ragtag few D.C. suburbanites have morphed into a global network embraced by Hollywood, allied (or at war) with the famous and beautiful, and known to millions, if not billions, of the planet's humans.

The opening scene sees Mathews, dressed as a carrot, pelted with lunchmeat by hostile children. In a later chapter he's locked up in a Paris psychiatric hospital after inciting a riot at a French KFC with the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde. He interrupts a Milan fashion show by climbing onto the runway dressed as a priest and unfurling a sign that reads: "Thou Shalt Not Kill."'

So... what can we take from the work of the good folks at PETA? When wannabe sophisticates show off their plebe roots by mocking intactivism, good. There is nothing they can say that can harm our position. We're only disadvantaged when to speak of circumcision of the unwilling is tabu.

When it comes down to brass tacks, they're defending the actions of people cutting up other people's genitals. If they didn't have years of social conditioning in their favor, cutters would be locked in prison.

We cannot be afraid to make other people uncomfortable. Who's willing to get arrested, to walk the street naked (as it were), to do whatever it takes to bring this in front of the public?

If something as longstanding a human habit (and dear to people's bellies) as being omniverous can be ruthlessly taken down by a group of committed activists, something as gruesome and bizarre as scraping off children's bits ought to be a snap.

We need to get some of the rich, famous, beautiful, wealthy, etc in with us. I know we've got a few out there speaking out for us from time to time, but we really need a celeb to come at it with all guns blazing.

So... any famous people lurking out there? Come on, you know you wanna.

They were kind enough to offer us a plan of action ready made (I am definitely getting the book!)

The circ videos are our veal-calves-unable-to-stand. That child's tremulous scream is our chicken-with-its-feet-grown-to-the-cage-bottom.

We need to mainstream something percieved as radical. You may still eat a burger now and again, but would you wear a honking big fur coat out on the town, hmmmn?

I wanna know how they came up with that? Do they hide out in dressing rooms or what?

Unfortenately it would be really difficult to find any famous person to talk against RIC publicly. It would mean end to his/hers career.

Colin Farrell did (in no uncertain and rather colorful terms, no less) and it certainly hasn't hurt his career.

I believe Dustin Hoffman was rather condemnatory (in a mild way) when his grandson was done. Yes it needs more celebrities to speak out, if that's how they feel.

People are shallow enough that they would take notice.

Your title is exactly how I feel. The more people (not just pg people on internet boards...) talk about this, the more the truth will come out.

I recently posted an idea to email a radio show. Any radio show or news show that does health topics, controversial topics, parenting topics... I think we need to encourage them to do a story on circumcision. Anything that gets it talked about more... the general public AND hopefully celebrities will start talking about it more once they hear about the topic.

Nothing to do with him having foreskin of course, but he does seem dirty - one of those guys who look like they smell teehee!

I think a lot of guys on that celeb lists seem like it would be true because of having parents of foreign extraction. For example, isn't on of Leonardo deCaprio's parents from Germany, his mom I think? I remember seeing something about him going to Cuba on his German passport with whatever model he was dating? And the sheens - isn't the mom his hispanic and Martin born to Irish parents? Good for Dustin hoffman! Although I was a bit dissapointed with the foreskin going into the fondue scene in meet the fockers, it would seem if the mom was a sex therapist she'd know better (I know I am reading too much into it). Anyway, good for the ones that speak out like John Leguizamo. I like him a lot.

I guess it is a hard subject to broach because it is about penises. I mean it really is a human rights issue, but a sensitive one. I don't think I could put a sticker on my car (honestly afraid to put anything considered liberal on my car since I live in Texas) but I have ordered a fridge magnet and a button to put on our diaper bag.

I do wish it could be seperated from being seen as a 'crunchy' issue since you don't need to extended breastfeed, practice AP, not vacc or any of that jazz to make the decision to not mutilate your childs genitals! All those things are wonderful and I practice some and support all, but people have a negative association with them for whatever reason, much like the problems peopel have with PETA about some issues even if they totally agree with them.

I do think that having someone who is widely respected, and is known to be intelligent would have an impact. Celebrities wouild make a huge difference if they were out there...publically.

I know, there have been some people here IRL who knew me before I learned about circ. They respected me and were good friends/aquaintances. I think the fact that they knew me as a scientist and respected me made them take a second look at the issue that I felt so strongly about.

I think sometimes, when intactavists are a little "over the top" that people just cast them aside thinking they are "not like them" or just "hippy people" or something. Not that there isn't a role for every intactavist (there is) but I think it would be very powerful (the most powerful) for someone to hear it from someone who they respect and give credibility to.

My sister in law gave me a "lot of slack" for nursing my kiddos past a year. Mainly at the time that she had barely nursed her first two for a few months, she came back at me with "oh, I'd never do that sort of thing" when I stated all the benefits, etc. Well...low and behold 5 years later or so, she gets pregnant and starts "exclusively breastfeeding, and breastfeeds to a bit past a year." It seems a "new neighbor" who was the wife of a wealthy buisinessman who she respected nursed her kiddos to they were two.

So, all of a sudden nursing past a year is normal. It's not that the message that we gave was an different (honestly, I probably am more scientific about it and gave more info even LOL) it was that she had a different relationship with that other person and they were friends.

My sister in law would say that I am too naturally oriented probably. She needed to hear it from someone who was mainly mainstream, but still nursed her kids past a year.

Same sort of thing for circumcision.
