Hello!

My husband and I were thinking of taking the Bradley class at Bellani, but so far we're the only couple signed up. And having other parents in the class is, I think, an important part of the experience. I'm not wed to the Bradley Method, but I liked the idea of taking a non-hospital class and a class that lasted longer than a one-day session. I'm looking for something in-depth that concentrates on natural childbirth, but will also educates us about interventions and drugs just in case. Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks!

My husband and I were thinking of taking it there as well. the timing of the start sort of snuck up on us, it starts next week doesn't it? I just haven't got around to signing up. I *would* prefer a Jan start, and have thought about starting late.

Although I have not taken it, I'm sure the class at Bellani is great...they do a really awesome job with everything there. I took the ABC (Alternative Birthing Center) class at Women & Infants' and did not learn anything that I didn't already know (I had already read several books on childbirth)...the only things I found helpful about it were what to expect from W&I (in terms of procedures) and getting the hospital tour. If you have the time, I'd recommend reading "The Birth Book" by William & Martha Sears. It definitely focuses on natural birthing, but also talks a lot about "interventions and drugs, just in case". And, if you really get into the reading, I'd also recommend: “Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth” by Ina May Gaskin, emphasis on natural childbirth with a midwife and “Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way” by Susan McCutcheon, specific to The Bradley Method. After reading these 3 books I felt just about as prepared as one could be. good luck!

The Bradley Method is really informative for labor assisting / relaxation techniques as well is informative...that is why it is the longest class you can take.

THere is another Instructor in Bristol, RI. Her name is Ellen Kellner (401) 245-5210. Perhaps she has more couples signed up?

Good luck!

Just an FYI, the instructor at Bellani is Ellen. So far, that is the only class she will be offering in January/February. I'm sorry I'm no other help.

Good luck!

Another option that gives you the best of both worlds is to do the hospital class so you will know the hospital procedures and then supplement with some private classes that can be done around your schedule.

This is actually more common than you might think. I would say probably half of my private CBE clients are supplementing a hospital class.

I hope you sign up LuliB! It starts January 14 actually. I think that having more people in the class would be great. The class is taught by Ellen Oltmann-Kellner (I might have the spelling of that wrong) -- I spoke with her on the phone, and she seems great and very knowledgeable. I'm also going to talk to some of the women in my prenatal yoga class this Saturday and see if anyone there might be interested, too. The more people, the better I think.

Great! Haven't missed it. You probably will see us there. Just need to talk to my man when he gets back from his business trip. Glad you posted it. Will spur me on to action.

Hi Everyone-
I just heard from Ellen that she was cancelling the January class at Bellani, but is willing to teach out of her home if she gets a few couples. I need to start poste haste because I am due in mid-March. Is anyone interested in signing up to start in the next week or so?
