anyone?
Im really curious about the sippy cups....I cant find anything but plastic
I think Oneida makes a sippy that is stainless. Pricey, though. I found one at a yard sale and it was quite nice. has a plastic lid that is not spill proof. Nova Natural used to sell some small enamel ware cups (no lids). Maybe they were demi-tasse cups? The enamel ware stuff works very well for kids. It is lightweight and unbreakable and easily available. Even Kmart sells some of it. I used to use some wooden salad bowls (bought at thrift stores and scrubbed clean because they tend to be sticky) for dry foods. Now they live in the play kitchen.
We, too, were wondering about the sippy cup issue and found Sigg kid bottles to be a good alternative. They do have a plastic top (not PVC
), but the interior has a water-based enamel that's been certified by an independent laboratory not to leach anything (the outer casing is aluminum)... even if it's dented, the interior stays in tact. We got one for our baby (now 10 months) from www.reusablebags.com. It took her a couple of days to get the hang of it, but now she loves it. I saw recently, you can also order a double handle for the Sigg kids to make it easier for them to lift up. I was a little concerned when it came that it smelled kind of strongly of paint, but that went away after a day. It's certified and specially designed to be used with acidic stuff like juice. The only bummer is, it's not dishwasher safe. But still, I'm going to get a couple of big ones for DH and me. Like I said, we got Mia's at Reusable Bags and I love their company, but I think you can also get them at Blue Ridge Mountain Sports and maybe some other places.

Hope it helps!
Emily

I've been wondering about the whole toddler thing, too. I heard from someone that the cheap corelle plates and bowls are tough enough to stand up to toddler use. What are the sigg bottles like? Dd won't use sippy cups and is too messy for just a cup. She uses the rubbermaid juicebox type bottle with the fold up/down straw.
I'm really trying to phase out plastics. We use glass now for leftovers. No plastic wrap. But what do you use in place of ziploc bags? I am constantly using them for snacks, freezing liquids, etc.

Several companies make "baggies" out of cellulose - you need a tie to close them but other than that, they're pretty sturdy and great for snacks or leftovers. Just do a search online for cellphone/cellulose bags like these:

I was just coming here to ask a question and it's along this line, so I'm going to post it here. How about adult size non-breakable dishes and glasses. My 2 yo wants to use the same stuff as us and take drinks out of my glass. I really don't want to use plastic, and I'm not a big fan of corelle and actually now that I think about it, he did break a corelle bowl that we had.
thanks
For Blue Heron -
I like wooden bowls. They're really plain (I like things simple and no logos) and they're so nifty for hot food. I threw away some coconut shells - now that I have space I wish I had the shells to make bowls of. I've been toying with the idea of using gourds for drinking cups and large salad bowls. And bird baths. I haven't put these into practice.
Those Sigg Kids cups are adorable!!!
Yay! I finally found something to replace my sippy cups!

Thanks!

DD loves her new SIGG bottle, and we got some of the Wrap-N-Mat or what ever they are called at reusablebags.com too - they are no where near as handy as a ziploc, but nice for sandwiches, and they fold out like a place mat. they do have a plastic liner, but at least it is reused?!? Sill trying to find something similar to ziplocs!
I bought a stainless steel plate for my son at a camping goods store. It is great. It has 3 compartments.
Can someone post the links for the Sigg Kids Cups please? TIA!

How does an infant or toddler "sip" on a SIGS bottle? I see in the ad there is a cute top covering the bottle -- but what is UNDER that? A plastic nozzle? Something else? Can someone please describe?

My son has a Sigg and loves it. He started with it when he was 2, though, but I bet a younger child would do find if that's what they learn on. Water drips if you hold it upside down, but you definitely have to suck to get a bunch out.

For his dinner plates, we use plain white corelle and at the outlet the other day found medium sized ones with dividers. I like the divider because I can put sauce in there for him.

We use only glass to store things in the fridge and most of the stuff in the cupboard, but I just bought a bunch of freezer ziplocks because of an article in Organic Times (I didn't do any other research, just took the easy way out of believing what I read
. We were going to buy a bunch of specific freezer glassware stuff, but it's just too expensive for us right now.

We have had good luck with pyrex. It ends up outside a lot na din the sandbox, in run over by the lawn mower all none to worse for it. i have broiken pryex before but it took a lot of force.

reusable like a zip-lock. isn't there a PUL something out there. I am thinking back to the mystery "thing" on the diapering forum quite a while back . . .
Just wanted to put a warning out there to all of you buying sigg, they look cute, but have hidden dangers. They are lined with enamal which is what ovens are coated with, which is PLASTIC! It is a very fine coating which is why they say not to put them in the dishwasher as it can break down very easily, not to mention it is alluminum under that very fine layer of enamal. Sorry if this disapoints anyone, but I believe we should all be well imformed.

just curious... where did you find this info? I ask because the Reusable bags website's info on Sigg states "The liner is a food grade, water-based, resin that is sprayed and baked on to bottle," and that "The liner absolutely does not leach Bisphenol-A or other potential toxins. We have conducted our own tests in the US with a California lab, and they confirmed the European findings." So I'm just interested in reading the information that contests this. Thanks!

I got a Thermos Funtainer for both of my kids and they love them! They are stainless steel and have a plastic lid with straw and come with an extra straw. It's hard to get away from plastic at the lid. I found ours at Target in the camping section! I use a lot of wax paper instead of ziploc bags. For liquids pyrex has a lot of little storage containers with lids. Enamelware is great for kids. I have been eyeing the stuff at www.lehmans.com
