Hey Mommas-

Me, DH and DD (10 months) will be vacationing to Cancun next month, we are a non-vax, AP, BF'ing family and i'm a little nervous about risks. We also CD, so that's an issue too. We've postponed solid food introduction, so DD still BF's for 90% of her nutrition (food is more for fun at this point). I've started her on a 5 week Thymuline program to boost her immune system, plus her usual Bio-K probiotics. I'm wondering if #1. Has anyone traveled under these circumstances with luck? and #2. What are your thoughts on the food situation? Should I bring some of my canned food for her? or rely on the food DH and I are eating? and #3. How the heck will I bring enough disposables for 2 weeks!?!?!?! That's like 100 diapers! I'm assuming CD'ing would be imposible, not to mention washing them in contaminated water?

So many questions, so little time!

Thanks mommas!:

I forgot to add my non-vaxing question...or statement I suppose..........:

SIL says i'm stupid for putting my DD at risk by taking her to an underdeveloped place without vaxing her......she also suggested I vax her NOW just to be "safe". lol...obviously I know that suggestion is DUMB...but does she have a point about DD being too young to put in this situation?

This isn't a to vax or not to vax question (I would NEVER!) It's more a to go on vacation, or not to go?

thanks

Here's the Mexico WHO page with VAD disease info:
Mumps seems to be most prevalent, but it looks from the schedule that they still give OPV. I think you'll be fine, especially if you're in a touristy type place that's Americanized. There will be bottled water and grocery stores and all that. We're going to Costa Rica in June with our unvaxed DS (who will be 15 months at the time) and we're not thinking twice about that, either. They have grocery stores there and sell disposables, etc. I'd rather CD while we're there, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a self-service laundry joint b/c I don't think some local lady would appreciate washing poopy diapers! I wouldn't worry about washing diapers in any dirty water, as a CD doesn't have to be sanitized (unless you're DC has a rash, open wound, or something).

I would personally bring her food rather than feeding her from your plate, but like a PP said, you could buy diapers there. If you are staying in a resort the water will not be contaminated but I'd think it would be a hassle to wash CDs on vacation (we CD and I'm not a big fan of wash day).

You could bring applesauce and other stuff in sealed containers that would travel well. That way you would absolutely know what she is eating. Especially if you are into organic, reading labels carefully, etc., it might be hard to track down a store that carries exactly what you are looking for, the labels might me unfamiliar, it might be hard to figure out the ingredients, etc.

I have been to Cancun and I know it's not the moon--I have also traveled to England where everyone speaks English and had a hard time in the grocery store!

My in-laws lived in Mexico (and not a touristy part) for 10 years and just moved back. My two-year-old who is not vaxed has been several times and was perfectly fine. He ate the fruits and some of the local foods.

If you're going to Cancun you will be shocked at how Americanized it is. You can go into any grocery and find endless amounts of Gerber (even orgainic) baby food and diapers (all the brands we have here.) Most Mexicans laugh at Americans who panic about the water and brush their teeth with bottled water. The same filters that filter out fountain soda, make their frozen all inclusive drinks, and what their food cooks in is the same water that will come out of your faucet in the hotel room. Their filters are great. I'm not saying to drink the tap water but you'll be fine.

I went not pregnant, pregnant, nursing a newborn and toddler and have tried everything - including tacos off the street - and have never gotten sick.

Have fun!

I have never been to Mexico, but other places in Central America, but I think they will probably have tons of fresh fruit and avocados, in other words, things 10 month olds like to eat. I don't know what the risks of hep A is where you will be, but I think you should just take care to wash and peel things.
As for cloth diapers, you're on vacation, who wants to fuss with that?:

I am very new to non-vax and i am not furthing any more vax's for ds 29 months...however our family is moving to MX in december of this year and my ped suggested giving ds the hep a vax...i went ahead and gave him one...this is before i educated myself on vax's...well now the ped wants to give the second of the series of hep-a and i have refused....any ways to answer your question about Cancun...it is so Americanized that you might not even know you are really in MX....we went to where we will be living for 2 weeks... about 2 hours west of Tampico...which is on the coast of the gulf of MX...in the middle of.....noooooo whhheerree....get my drift....and ds came down with fever and vomiting...but come to find out his cousin had just gotten over rotovirus a few days before we got their...so sure enough ds got rotovirus...but not from eating fresh avacados or fresh banana's or even brusing his teeth with regular water....you will be fine...i would be more worried about changing his diaper in the airport or him trying to chew on the seat in the airplane than i would be about catching any illness while in MX....great place...you will have lots of fun...relax

We LOVE Cancun! FYI-You can hop on a bus and head to "downtown" Cancun for WalMart and Sam's Club. It's a short ride, and everyone that has a kitchenette in their resort goes there for their groceries. Walmart looks just like USA Walmart. (no problem finding Gerber or Pampers!)

I would be very careful about feeding baby local food or water. We stay at a 5 star resort and still always get a mild case of cramps and you know what....it never stops us from going though. Not a big deal at all. It's beautiful there!!Stick with bottled water and jarred food for the babe.

Have FUN!
