so here is a debate....i am against drinking while pregnant which seems obvious but some people do it. I actually know someone who was excited to tell me (when 8 months pregnant) that i could drink as soon as i hit second tri. one or two beers a week she would have. it was disturbing to me to say the least.

anyway, i know some docs will say that you can have a half a glass of wine now and then...whatever to each his own.

it's not like i have to drink or anything. but with all the studies i have read, no one can conclusively say a beer is too little an amount to cause FAS so why risk it?

but what about non alcoholic beer options, like O'douls ?

just wondering what you mammas thought

I am not against drinking BUT have not craved it at all while pregnant. I guess it just doesn't appeal. I think even 'non-alcoholic' beverages still have some alcohol content even though it is quite low. If you want to completely avoid exposure of your embryo to alcohol, I would say just abstain. Besides, O'douls is just nasty...

If you are really worried, you should not drink non-alcoholic beer, it still has .05% alcohol in it. You should cut out oj, too, as it is slightly fermented. DON'T drink Kambucha, it is an organic raw health drink that is also fermented. Personally, I think they should be talking about how bad diet coke and ANYTHING witha ton of additives is for a pregnant woman. A beer or a glass of wine is totally ok

I had surprised myself by how attached I had grown to having a beer with nachos (we make a really great queso dip with beer and since it comes in a pack of 6. . .) and I really missed it once I got pregnant. So I've been having an O'douls with the few meals that just seem to fit better with a beer and I haven't worried at all. Initially I wondered about the alcohol content, but it's so absurdly low, plus I'd only have one, and I rarely finished even that. Turns out, non-alcoholic beer tastes BAD when it gets warm.

So if it's been sounding good, I'd take a few sips. Maybe somebody will split it with you. For me, it was just what I "needed".

only uncontrolled american studies (where moms are drinking a 6 pack a night and doing other drugs) conclude that there is no known safe amount of alcohol in pregnancy. European studies and all of my midwifery texts say that up to ten units a weeek show no detriments or FAS. ten units is quite a bit actually, so No, I dont think theres anything wrong with an ocassional glass of wine, never mind a non alcoholic beer.

Oh I would love you if you could give me some documented mention of this!

I have been CRAVING Beer!!!! I HAVE to get a sip off of DH's, I'm begging and drooling for it.

Usually I am satisfied with the first drink, but people always try to make me feel guilty

I drank about 4 ounces of Guinness on St. Patrick's Day and it was DELICIOUS. My OB told me that she recommends no more than 3 servings of alcohol per week as long as they arenot consumed on the same day.

I think people go overboard when they suggest that ANY alcohol is harmful. I've read multiple studies that have shown no correlation between mild to moderate alcohol consumption and adverse effects on the fetus.

But I also concede that for some people, the "better safe than sorry" mentality is best if they are prone to worrying.

I think it's a bit ridiculous how up in arms our society is with controlling everything a pregnant woman eats and drinks. Don't eat cheese, don't eat sushi, can't have a drop of alcohol. What about all those women around the world (like the French or the Japanese) where these things are normal pregnant or not.

I am not a big drinker, never have been, but for some reason I've been wanting it lately. So I have not a shred of guilt for taking a drink from DH's glass. I would never drink a whole (anything) myself, just because it's not my style, but even if DH has 3 or 4 and I have 1-2 drinks of each spaced over the course of an afternoon/evening... I don't have a problem with it.

But, going out clubbing or having a couple drinks in a single day - that's not something I would do.

Just as a word of note, alcohol can extend your pregnancy........I joked about cracking a beer when I was 40wks pg with my DD in the middle of August - and she said DON'T!!! It can delay labor - and there have been some midwives/docs who will suggest a glass of red wine a day to slow preterm labor....

I won't drink any alcohol, but never did drink much anyway. I am not against taking a sip of something my DH is drinking though. I agree with PPs that 1) there is a bit too much hysteria about what you should and shouldn't eat and drink in pg and 2) that we should be much more worried about all the chemicals in things like diet soft drinks and preservatives in foods than about a few sips of beer or some soft cheese!

I worry mostly about non-organic food and anything not made by me (i.e. restaurant food and esp fast food). . .I don't want to expose this LO to pesticides or chemicals (or at least not the ones I can control). Oh and I am even more alarmed than ever about people smoking near me.

and as far as alcohol delaying labor.....yes it has been used to delay preterm labor. As far as term labor? Ive never seen any research to support that. I'd be interested to. Most midwives advise clients to when labor has started but is not well established, have a glass of wine and take a bath. If its "real labor" it will NOT stop, and if its "false" or practice as I'd rather call it, it will actually stop.

We had a bunch of leftover beer in the fridge from DH's surprise party. It was good stuff too and was so very tempting on stressful days. He bought me some O'Doul's Amber and it did the trick. I'll have to try some Beck's. Are there any other good non-alcohol beer brands?

Me too. I've been stealing a sip here and there, but not letting myself feel guilty about it
