Hi ladies.

I appreciate the help some of you offered in response to a previous post. Since our move date is only getting closer, I'm hoping to get to know you a little before we get there. I'm moving away from my family, so I know I'm going to need a good network of friends and aquaintences to keep myself sane!
So, if you can take the time, please drop me a line and tell me a little about yourself. I would also love to get together sometime after we move down there!!!

Some things you could share (and I will answer, too) could be:
Around where do you live? We're hoping to live in Flagler.
How long have you been in FL? I'm not there yet, but we're moving to homestead.

Where did you live before? Before now (I'm in VA) I lived in Australia, Japan, Texas... I could go on!
How many children do you have and how old is/are s/he/they? I have one little girl who is two and a half and will have a few week old to two month old when we move.

I look forward to getting to know you!

Hi,

My name is Tiffany. Dh and my almost 4 year old ds live in Ft. Lauderdale. Next month we will be moving to Deland, which is about 15 minutes west of Daytona.

I agree with wanting to get a network of friends to keep you sane.

Did you say that you are moving to Homestead? As in really south Florida?

Tiffany,
I'm in Orange City, one city south of Deland. It's such a cute town. When are you moving??

no... we're not moving TO Homestead... we're moving to the area between Daytona and St. Augustine to homestead (as DH understood it, that means that we'll be living there year-round?).

I'm familiar with Deland and Orange county! Those are quite close enough to the areas we're looking into that we could all meet up!!!
YEAY!

We can't set an actual move date because it's all dependant upon the birth date of the baby growin in my belly right now. And you know how fickle those babies can be!
I'm very much hoping (and will be doing everything within my power to help it) that we'll actually have the baby in EARLY September and then move at the very beginning of October... but we could end up moving as late as the very end of October if the baby chooses to come at the beginning of October (which is entirely likely with the Sept. 23 due date).

So, we'll have a good bit of time to converse here and get to know each other as individuals and a sort of group, too!

I will be moving either the weekend of Sept 23 or Sept 30th. It really depends on dh's work situation.

It would be so great to get together once we get up there. I have lived in S. Florida my entire life so moving and not knowing anyone is a little unnerving.

How old is/are your child/children?

I want to put ds in preschool when we get up there. Do you have any recommendations? I saw something about a place called the Children's House Montessori School. Have you heard anything about it? We are heading up there next weekend and planning to stay for a week while dh interviews at a few companies. I wanted to go check out some schools while we are there. I don't mind driving for a good school so anything you can suggest would be great.

How about dr.'s any that you love and would recommend?

Hope you don't mind all of the questions

Thanks!

I have two friends who have sent their children to that school and I've only heard good things about it. I think they may have a waiting list so you may want to look into that. The only other friend that sends her kids to preschool is in Deltona, that would be a drive but she LOVES it. I'll ask around at church tomorrow and see what people think.

As far as Ped's we use Central Fl Peds. They are a pratice of five women, we love Dr Lewis, with an office in Orange City and one in Lake Mary. So far, only eight weeks
, they've been supportive of breastfeeding and delaying vaxs (I haven't told them we've decided to avoid them all together yet). But anyhow I'm really happy with how they do things. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about Lake Mary Peds, also in OC and LM, so we stayed away.

Tiffany: what does your dh do?? We know some people through church and if there is a connection I could give a good word.

Tori: what city are you moving to?? We just drove up A1A from Daytona to St. Aug a couple months ago, it is such a beautiful drive.

BTW I wasn't ignoring you before I was confused by the Homestead thing too, sorry

Let me know if there's anything I can do

Wow, I didn't even think about waiting list*blush* I guess that means the school has to be pretty good then.

What church do you go to. I was raised Catholic, but I don't mind going to any Christian church. I just want to find one that I enjoy.

Dh designs websites. His current title is Sr. Multimedia Developer, but he would rather do mainly Flash and Actionscript animation. He has been working on an online portfolio, www.jonmull.com. Anything you can do would be great. Pass his website to anyone and everyone. I know his dream job would be to work at EA Games, but they aren't hiring his position right now. I personally think he may need to know someone that works there though to get in, but ya never know. He loves what he does and loves being creative.

Thanks for Dr. Lewis. I am going see if they are on our insurance plan.

Congradulations on your new baby. I don't blame you for delaying your vax. I really regret getting them when ds was first born. I really wish that I had postponed them like I did the rest of them. I do get them, but he is going to turn 4 next month and I think he is just about caught up to the 18 month old schedule. Your baby is so lucky that you are educating yourself so early on.

Thanks again for everything.

thomlynn: We're not really for sure on which city yet, but DH is set on Palm Coast and Flagler Beach. He went down for a job search week and LOVED those areas.

That's awesome that you guys are planning not to vax at all. DH and I made that decision when preggie with #1 and we're definitely sticking to it with this one (and all future kiddos, too).

Do you participate in any play groups that are natural parenting friendly?

I really look forward to meeting you both tiffanymm and thomlynn! I hope we can arrange something soon after we're all in one area (of course yall might already know each other by then!

Another mdc mama has her kiddos in montessori in this area. I'll send her the link to this thread and see if she has any advice for you. There's a group of us (in various amounts of crunchiness
) that try to get together as often as life allows. At least 6 of us on here now & children fom 15 to not-here-yet.

Hey ladies ... I am from Lake Helen/Deltona area. My children go to Casa Montessori in Deland ... I love it ... there happen to be 2 Montessori schools in Deland. The Childrens House and Casa Montessori. We chose Casa because they had the best M school Training. Ms. Mary and Ms. Donna both worked at The Childrens House for a very very long time and then Mary opened up her own school. She has over 25 years of being a M school Teacher and Ms. Donna is close to that same amount of time. Casa is a very sweet school. She has done it to be very much like a home enviroment. She has a toddler program and a primary program and will be opening a elementary program next year. My son is now in Kindergarten there and more than likely will remain there for a few more years and same with my daughter. I cant say enough good about the school and the staff there. I cant say much about The Childrens House because i dont know much about it but I do have several friends who send their children there and they all seem to like it. If you have any questions feel free to PM me or post to this thread.

Btw I love Deland.

Sorry for typos, NAK here

I just joined a SAHM group through yahoo based out of Deltona. I haven't gone to anything yet but the ladies seem really nice. Do a search through yahoo groups if you're interested. I found out about it from another MDC member.

We go to First Baptist Deland. We like it. The other young moms aren't very AP hence looking into the Deltona mom's group. I have heard a lot of good things about First United Methodist and The Sanctuary. Also, there is St. Barnabas (sp?) and St Peter's (Catholic). DH's boss goes to the latter and says the priest is good.

Just wondering if any of you in the area know of any holistic practitioners?

Are there many/any acupuncturists?

How about good chiropractors?

I'm sorry if these are totall lame questions, but I have no idea how open to alternative treatments and things the area is... I know it's pretty hard to find GOOD alternative care providers where I am. I've finally developed a nice network, and now we're moving! *sigh*

Personally I don't know but I have seen a magazine at the local health food stores that has ads for them. Next time I'm there I'll pick one up.

Also:

This is the preschool a friend's kid goes to and she loves it.

Thanks, I will give them a call.

Tori - I know just how you feel. It's hard to start over your network of professionals that you love working with. DH and I have been seeing a marriage counselor and it is going sooo well that I am afraid to leave. I may suggest webcam appointments, lol.
