Hei!

I actually came to MDC because of The Case Against Circumcision board. It is a safe haven for those who fight against circ. I had absolutely no idea that something horrid like circ even excisted in USA(or anywhere else)until I moved to USA 1999. Ever since that I have been active in the fight. Luckily the circ rates have come down. But do be careful if you get a son. Make sure that you find 'foreskin friendly doctor' - unfortenately most doctors/nurses in USA are still clueless about natural penises!

I am back living in Finland - I only lived in USA one year(San Francisco). I totally agree with the measurement things but now my DW has to fight with same thing here and she is desperately trying to learn kilos and meters(and finnish language: ).

Waving Hi from Scandinavia - spring is coming and of course we Finns are getting ready for Eurovision contest. We *finally* got it here!

How have you otherwise adjusted into USA culture?

I am American and DH is Danish. I got a Berlitz pocket dictionary (English-Danish/Danish-English) and it has a special section just about food. This has been extremely handy for both of us! I made my BIL a birthday cake when I was in Denmark and it was non-trivial to find the ingredients.

I also found a nice refrigerator magnet with some basic conversions so I don't have to think too hard about recipes. Hopefully it won't be too long before my Danish is good enough to just use Danish cookbooks.

I'm still learning my way around the boards. There's so much here!

With regards to circ, even though I have grown up in the US, I found this very surprising when I found out several years ago. It's not like my friends and I were chatting about foreskins during recess at school. I had always assumed it was purely a religious thing for Jewish and Muslim boys. It just doesn't make any bit of sense to me to do it otherwise.

I was at an other parenting/babywearing site and someone started a thread about circ and posted a link to CAC. I was HORRIFIED that something like this was common in the US .
So I lurked for a long time. Then I found the diaper-board and started lurking there too

I am 50% Norwegian - my father was born there and immigrated after the war (WWII). I have very little knowledge anymore of the language or culture; I learned a bunch before I visited Norway when I was 18 ... that was a few moons ago. I would love to relearn (and actually posted here and got some good responses), but right now our focus is ASL and Spanish (we live in Southern CA). I dream of visiting again with my dh and my boys ... I secretly dream of dh getting an over-seas teaching assignment in Norway so we can live there for an entire year. We (the family) still have a house in Tvedestrand, but because of land-ownership laws, we had to sell most of the farmland/wilderness land a few years back.

Oh, AstridS ... my middle name is Astrid.

I was also surprised - and shocked! - to read about it on these forums. I knew it was fairly normal in U.S. but had no idea what it was like. I cried my eyes out when I read about that babyshaped plastic board that they strap the little boys to, and what they put these little babies through. It's just disgusting and horrible.

And I was surprised to read that people actually worry that there might be health problems connected to having an intact, normal penis! And that they worry about how to clean it and take care of it when the boys get older. That's looking at things completely upside down, isn't it! I am the mother of two uncircumcised (of course) boys myself, and my husband is also (of course) intact. It never crossed my mind that there could be a problem.

I think circumcising boys in hospitals is probably legal in Scandinavia, since many Jews and Moslems have that tradition. Circumcising girls is of course illegal.

Hi!

Norwegian member here!

There are atleast 3 other Norwegians here, but I haven`t seen them here in a while.

Yeah, when I first started reading american boards (a few months before my son was born) I was horrified to read about circ.

I am the administrator of Norways first AttachmentParenting forum, and welcome all Norwegians to join us in making AP more known in Norway. www.tilknytningsomsorg.no

Yuhuu, another Norwegian...

I am not here as often as I used to, and I never browse around, almost...

Circ here for religious reasons, is not easy, and mostly done in private hospitals, for between 3000-7000 kroner. (I am a muslim, so I know ) Medical reasons is done mainly after kid is 7, but if it is very urgent, they do it sooner, but they rather not do the whole circumcision, they do a lighter version.

Browsing through the natural home and living section, it seems pretty US-centric as far as brand names and shops. Anyone in Scandinavia have recommendations closer to home? DH & I basically need to furnish our whole home (we only have a couch and chair right now), plus all the organic/natural brands I'm used to for cleaning, hygiene, etc. aren't available in Denmark. Thanks!

I'm American but married to a Dane and we have two kids. We live in Århus and I wouldn't trade raising my kids here with anywhere else in the world.

If you are interested in less American-centric forums, check out Forældre og Fødsel - www.fogf.dk. They have special forums for home birth, ifavn (attachment parenting), birth lobby, cloth diapering.... and of course it is Scandinavian-centric.

Special note: If any of you are in the Århus area, please write back or send me a private mail. I have an english speaking mother group, but most of them are in the CIO, BF.... croud. It would be nice to have some of use get together that are a little less mainstream.
