not enough iron in breastmilk?

614 Views 5 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Juliensiss
Went for DS' 4-month well-baby check today, and ped asked if I'd started letting him taste cereal yet. Nope, he's exclusively breastfed, thankyouverymuch. I told him I planned to let him start tasting cereal, bananas, etc. at around 6 months if he seemed interested. Ped said if I didn't start cereal at 6 months, DS would need a vitamin supplement because there isn't enough iron in breastmilk. WTH is he talking about? I've never heard this before.

NEVERMIND... just found thread from a few days ago. Sorry I didn't search for it first...

I have been told the same thing. But buy 6 months the iron they had stored from in utero is used up, Weather it is true or not I really don't know, but Im betting Some mama's can tell us the truth, as a lot of us are secret MDC doctors LOL. We know more than they do.

I really don't buy that whole arguement. My dd didn't start actually eating solids on a daily basis until she was close to 9 months old. We NEVER gave her fortified rice cereal or anything else supposedly high in iron. It seemed like nonsense IMO to give a refined food with added vitamins. Our ped insisted on checking her iron levels at her 9 month check up (and like I said she had just start a week or so before eating a tiny bit of solids- usually sweet potatoes which are not high in iron) and her levels weren't just good...they were GREAT
The iron in breastmilk is much more absorbable than a supplement added in a refined grain. If when your dc starts eating solids you feel the need to add a grain (I don't think a grain should be a first food though) why not give pureed brown rice instead?

I've never understood why doctors can't just believe that breastmilk has everything they need in the right amounts until they are ready to start eating solids. UGH! We had fluoride drops, iron drops and Vit D drops offered to us at every visit after 6 months

I have four sound and healthy children who were breastfed exclusively until ready to eat people food (not packaged stuff), never received any type of supplement. Unless they are actually anemic, I wouldn't bother.
So, hundreds of years ago, or later, lol, when all babies were breastfead only, and there wasnt any baby food or cereal, babies lived off there mammas, were they all iron deficiant??? NOPE!!! Doctors are too funny...

Great Point! I am going to "accidently" dump his drops down the drain.
DH is all for if Dooctor says than it is right.
