My dd is six weeks old and I still have never felt the "let down" sensation everyone talks about. I asked an LC about it at our first ped visit (when dd was 6 days old) and she said not to worry, that it doesn't start until around 3 weeks. Well, we're at 6 weeks now and still nothing. DD is gaining weight well, so I guess bfing is obviously working well enough--though dd does seem to nurse pretty much non-stop all day long and I'm still experiencing frequent nipple soreness (it hurts a lot when she latches on but does not last the whole nursing session) so I do wonder if there is something we are not getting quite right, though we're doing everything the LC and the books I read have told me to do.

I only felt letdown a handful of times and I actually never even knew when my milk came in. I never felt engourged at all so I think it's normal for some moms (or maybe just you and me
). My dd also was a VERY frequent nurser at the beginning but the feedings started to become spaced out over time. I also had a lot of soreness like you describe. I found lanolin to be really helpful in easing some of the discomfort.

Hello!
I finally feel mine but only sometimes and my baby is three months old! My LC told me it is normal for some women to never feel their letdowns! And as far as frequent nursing - my baby still does and she is three months. As long as your baby is growing just relax and read a good book while she is eating! It will space out eventually! :LOL

i asked my sister the same question one time. she said she never felt the "let down" and she nursed dd1 for 12 months and dd2 for 18.

with ds1 i never felt a let down and with ds2 i didnt until i got thrush. ds2 is going on 11 weeks. i was feeling very painful let downs because of the thrush so be glad your not experiencing that.

as long as dc is growing that is all that matters!

With my first, I never ever felt the let-down, and I nursed her for about 22 months.

With the newest baby, it was a very distinct, shocking feeling when it first happened. I was like "Oh! So that's let-down!" If he starts to fuss, or even if I just start thinking about him, I can feel the tingling and have to press my arms against myself to keep milk from spilling everywhere. :LOL I never had these feelings with my first child, so it's pretty weird.

I thought I was the only one! I never knew when my milk came in, either. I could only tell once his poop changed at first.

I never got engorged, which I attributed to him nursing non-stop from birth.

And I have never leaked, or needed breast pads. My mom said she was the same way. It's like our bodies make the exact right amount and nothing more. Good thing my baby always gained weight well, or else I wouldn't think I had any milk at all. (The downside of this is that I have never quite gotten the hang of pumping-- I can't seem to pump much extra at all).

I usually don't feel the let down, but I have felt it a few times (in 10 months of nursings.) The times I remember feeling it have been at night, when my baby has a long, steady suck and I have felt a tingling sensation as he starts to suck deeper. It took me a while to realize that was "let down" as I normally do not notice it.

Me neither! I do sometimes feel a slight sensation now and then, but it's nothing like the strong feeling my mom described. I never got engorged either. I sometimes leak but only in the middle of the night or the morning - and supposedly I have a lot of milk, a lactation consultant weighed my daughter before/after a feeding when my daughter was 3 weeks and she got 4 oz from the first breast and an ounce and a half from the second.
