not sure to think about this -- re. ds's bedwetting

My oldest son is 7 yo and has wet the bed everynight since always. He often wet through his pull-up and soaked his sheets. I've tried not to make a big fuss about it, but now and then made suggestions for possible ways to address it -- and he has always blown me off about it and not wanted to deal with it.

My youngest is 3 yo and has been dry at night for a month now with no effort. 3 nights ago he refused to wear a diaper to bed, which was perfectly reasonable, but I knew it would make the 7 yo feel bad. Sure enough, though he didn't want to talk about it, my 7 yo started acting crazy, anxious, and agitated. The next night he announced outright that he was not wearing pull-ups at night anymore either (not to be outdone by a 3 yo, I guess.) I was worried about it, but he has been *perfectly dry* for 2 nights now!

I am amazed, and concerned and slightly irritated. Amazed because I really didn't think this was something within his control. Concerned because I am worried that he must not be sleeping very soundly in order to manage this issue. Irriatated that he could have been in control for all this time and here I've been washing his sheets almost every day like a slave!

Anyway, I suppose I should just be glad and move on. But the whole situation seems weird to me.

mamaduck, I just wanted to let you know that I think all the things you are feeling are perfectly okay. I know that I would probably be more than a little irritated and more than a little happy to not be washing sheets any more. How is your son doing now? Still dry?

Congrats to him for staying dry!! My ds is 11 now but I can remember him wetting the bed til 5yrs maybe?? I know how frustrating it is and not sure why but it seems he's very determined. Good for him!

That would be my concern. I would check to see if he's sleeping. Most of the time it's not controllable. He should know that it's OK and it's not his fault. I have a 5 year old son (6 in dec.), and a 4 year old son. Since potty training my 4 year old hasn't needed pull-ups even at night, but my 5 year old still wears them. He's a little embarrassed, but I always reassure him that he can't help it and it's not a bad thing. I have a cousin that wet the bed till she was 16. I have a friend that was like that too. If you are concerned talk to the doctor. There are medications and some type of monitor that wakes them before they pee or something.

We did talk to the doctor, and you mention all the options that I've disscussed with him and he has resisted.

3 nights now, and he doesn't seem tired. Shaking my head here. Doesn't make any sense, unless he was laying in bed every night and intentionaly peeing his pants before!!! Argh. Doesn't seem like him though.

That's really odd. I guess only time will tell. Let's hope that it's the end of his bed wetting and he's getting good sleep.
And may my son be next. lol

Mamaduck,
First of all, Yay! for dry sheets!! Second, Yay! for being inspired by a younger brother!! Lastly, I did have a friend once who told me her son mumbled sleepily one morning when she had to wake him, found him to be dry and urged him to get up and go to the bathroom, "That's okay, I'll just lay here and pee in my pullup like I always do."
So, who knows?

mamaduck I have been wondering recently if wearing pullups helps them keep wetting in some weird way??? my ds2 (6 next month) has been wet every night since the start of this year, prior to this it was maybe twice a week - I've been wondering if it really could be under his control but somehow putting on the pullups at night has reinforced the pattern of wetting?? I can't figure it either - and I'm wondering also if he will keep wetting until ds3 is learns bladder control in a few years!!

also one Q : does yr ds now get up at night to pee? if it was a bladder size problem it can't have stretched to hold a whole nights pee so quickly - so some thing neurological has happened?

edited to add - now I see sofiamommas post - "I'll pee in my pullup" :LOL I know my ds has done this once or twice, but sometimes when I'ma wake nursing ds3 I can smell that ds2 has peed already and it might only be midnight
He has wet the bed the past 2 nights, so he requested to wear pull-ups again. He's really upset. I think he just wasn't sleep well the nights he was dry and he can't keep that up.

We take him potty everynight around 11:00. He sleeps so soundly that he never remembers it. We have to steer him to keep him from walking into walls and whatnot. He still pees again sometime in the wee hours of the morning.

My son is the same way. Pull-ups or no pull-ups he'll still wet, AND sleep right through it. Someday he'll outgrow it. Until then he will wear pull-ups because I have enough laundry to do as it is now. lol
