I am looking into Montessori for my boys. Do you know if it would be a problem that they aren't vaccinated? They are in public preschool right now and we signed a waiver. But I don't think private schools have to let non-vaccinated kids in do they?

It should be a state requirement. I know in my state, they offer a personal exemption, which is good for most private schools, and all public schools. I recall hearing something about state funding/subsidies once. e.g. if they accept low-income kids, reduced fee lunch stuff?? There are a lot of state programs that I'm not familiar with, and most private schools in my area accept/use them, which means they would have to accept the vax exemption.

Also, while I can definitely see the pp point in not asking, and just handing it to them, I don't think I'll be doing this. I already had to learn the hard way on cloth diapering by not asking enough questions up front (or rather not asking the right person at the school). It was NAEYC accredited, so they would not allow him to attend in CDs. I had researched the state laws, but not the rules associated with this accreditation until after the fact. I would imagine there are private schools out there that do not accept any sort of public funding, and they technically would have the right to deny your enrollment due to lack of immunizations (or at least they could in my state). I'd hate to find out about it after being on a waiting list for several months (like the M school near my house), getting my hopes up, etc.

I think cloth dipes is a very differnt issue. Our Montessori school wont take cloth dipes either...but my ds was potty trained before he started at 3 1/2.
ALl I can say is thats what I did. The first school we went to hadnt seen the exemption before, but I just acted like it was no big deal and I knew what I was doing. I even said " wow, Im surprised you havent seen this, but surely you dont discriminate on the basis of religious beliefs??" They were all "uh duh of course not.." and that was that. DO what you are comforatble with...

If they are completely private (and not tied to some public funding) I believe they do have the right to not take unvaxed kids if they choose not to. I believe they do not have to honor an exemption.

However, my Montessori school (which is completely private, not even a nonprofit) had no problem with my exemption (since they are a school they still need to follow the vax laws regarding collecting vax info and exemption info). Many of the parents there are more crunchy, so I'm sure we are not the first exemption they have seen by any means.

In my state, all schools have to honor the religious exemption. I guess it varies by state.

My daughter goes to a Montessori in Virginia and we haven't been given any problems - we filled out our religious exemption form and were good to go.

In my state, I turn in the same exemption form for public or private schools (we've done both) and have had not even as much as a raised eyebrow.

CD's weren't a problem either. Guess I'm lucky.
