Freaking stupid! Of course I think banning cells phones in cars is stupid too. If you aren't capable of paying attention then you can be held responsible but to bann it for everyone is ITA a nanny state.

Will we be banning children next? They seem to be the biggest distraction

That's ridiculous. Will everyone next have to hold hands and walk in a single-file line with their quiet fingers next to their lips?

Actually, it's not NYC. It's Albany. A different kettle of fish.

However, it's still one of the stupidest ideas I've heard of this kind. Poeple have been listening to walkmen and CD-players for years while crossing the street. Why weren't they banned then?

I read that it was actually Brooklyn and Buffalo. It's being intro'd by a brooklyn politician (Carl Kruger) in response to two people in his district dying in pedestrian/auto accidents. It's being introduced in Albany becuase that's where the state legislators meet

A state senator from Brooklyn said on Tuesday he plans to introduce legislation that would ban people from using an MP3 player, cell phone, Blackberry or any other electronic device while crossing the street in New York City and Buffalo.

While they are at it, they should ban talking, eating, drinking and bubble gum chewing. It should be mandated that we all hold hands too. Welcome to nanny state.

dancing in NYC is already banned if an establishment does not have a cabaret license. they are not easy to obtain and cost lots of $$. and yes, the authorities do come around and check to make sure that no more than two people are dancing or otherwise moving rhythmically :
