So how does nursing on demand work with a distracted tot?

I basically get some signals, chomping, turning his head towards my chest but when he's at the boob he takes a light second to nurse, then is distracted or fussy. He is 4 months now and seems to more focused on the eating every two hours now then every hour like he'd take it even up to a week ago. Maybe this is his schedule now? Also throw in teething to the mix! It's been so confusing lately.

I do nurse in a darkened room for his naps which goes well. I tried a blanket but that just became another distraction. He bats at it! I tried a nusing necklace but that becomes more interesting than the nursing. help?

No answers, I'm afraid, but sympathy as my 4 and 1/2 month old is exactly the same. She's so excited about the world she isn't interested in feeding. We have a little more success in a quiet room, but out and about - forget it! I've given more than a few people an eyeful lately as she keeps popping off to look round.

I just keep offering the boob if she hasn't eaten in two or three hours. I figure it will pass and she won't starve herself.

Our DD is similar. 6 months old and so distractable. She'll get fussy, nurse about 30 seconds, look around, swing back for another gulp or two, repeat! It is actually super cute, but I get a little frustrated in public, or when I want her to nurse so I can look after the toddler....

Just a phase, for the most part. Isn't it all?

Try putting a tempoary tattoo on your breasts. Seriously.

Worked WONDERS for my kids! Someting eye level that just totally grabbed their attention! This will pass!!!

What a fantastic idea, thank you!
I'm afraid now that he's really perfected that pincer grasp, that I may get pinched more than I like, but I need to do something. I'll do this tomorrow (my DD has more than enough temp. tattoos) and not tell my DH just so I can see his reaction when he sees the tats the first time.

My 9 mos old is the same way! I agree with some of the moms above, the best thing that works for me is to lay down with my DD in a dark bedroom (that doesn't even always work!). The only other thing that works, is having my older DD tandem nurse, it seems to inspire the little one
