My ds is a week short of 4 months. He has only nursed 4-5 times per day for the last few days. He's my 5th child - all the others were breastfed too - but none of them seemed to go so long between feeds. He's happy and sleeps well (most of the night and long naps during the day) and seems to be growing well - so I'm just wondering if anyone else has a baby who nurses so infrequently?

That's EXACTLY how my DD is and has been since around 3 or 4 months. She started sleeping through the entire night at 3 months so she doesn't eat at night and she only eats 4 or 5 times during the day. She's almost eight months now so her eating pattern has been like this for a while. She growing fine (been in the 95th percentile in weight since 3 weeks). I'm always asking my Doctor about her eating pattern and she says it's fine as long as she's growing. My biggest concern was nutrition and if that was affected by her only eating 4-5 times a day.

My DD2 was like that at that age. She dropped to nursing pretty infrequently-- I don't think as few as four times a day, maybe more like six, but there was still a pretty significant drop in frequency. Her time at the breast each feeding also decreased a lot, too. Anyway, she was climbing growth curves all the while, so she was obviously fine, so I never worried much about it. It didn't last-- when her teeth started coming in, she went back to nursing more frequently. So enjoy the break while you can.

I would start to worry if baby started peeing too infrequently, or stopped growing well. Then I'd start to offer the breast more often, and coax baby to nurse more. But if baby is growing and wetting, I think you can trust baby to know exactly how much milk he needs.

Thank you, it's reassuring to know that others have experienced the same thing. I'm not exactly worried about his infrequent nursing as he seems to be content most of the time - it just seems surprising to me that he's happy with so few feeds! I guess I'll just enjoy the break as you suggest!
