I just saw an ad for nursing necklaces.

It seems a bit like a marketing gimmick to me so I was just wondering anyone has used one.

If you have can you tell me why you bought one? What is the purpose?
Did you like it and why? Did your baby like it?

We bought one and we used it for quite a while. She would pinch me, or tweak me, so the necklace worked. We don't use it any more, but it really helped when she was pinching. It gave her something to hold onto.

I wear a necklace at all times - not a nursing necklace, just a regular necklace - dd likes to play with it sometimes while she's nursing but most of the time she doesn't pay any attention to it. I made my own bright colored beaded necklace to see if that would make a difference but she ignored it as well so for me a nursing necklace seems gimicky (sp) and unnecessary; however, a child who is more interested in things like that may like having a nursing necklace to play with - i think it depends on the baby and mama.

I bought one, Hannah loves it...but only when she is not nursing! LOL! While nursing she has to have a handfull of my hair, nothing else will do. Oh well.

Not every tool works for every baby and mother. I personally have had great luck with a nursing necklace and personally know of many other moms who have also. The whole idea is to find something that is "safe" and you can wear to give your baby something to play with other than you or to stop them from being too distracted to nurse. They are supposed to be designed to be safer than a regular necklace so when the baby pulls on it, it will not break. Most are brightly colored to hold the baby's attention also.

I got one months ago from Konurs Mom (see the above link) and it was a lifesaver. Kelsey was not a twiddler, but she would pinch. She needed to keep her hands busy, and the necklace did that. She has outgrown the pinching, but the necklace is still a favorite (supervised) toy. Feel free to PM me for a further explanation.

Everyone has their own opinion just like not everything works for every mom and baby. I own a nursing necklace and I don't know what I ever did without it and my sling. My son is 6 months old and he holds it and plays with it while he nurses. It has cut down on the nursing gymnastics. He also uses it as a teething ring. I think it's great. My husband likes it too since it has sports and the kids name on it.

I bought a nursling necklace when my DS was 2 months old... thanks for reminding me I have it! I tried to use it but I kept forgetting to put it on. Now that he is 6 months, and gets way distracted I need to start using it again. I think the trick is to find something that the baby likes. The one I have is really pretty and not bright, I would probably wear it just because.

Here is the one that I have.

I like it because it doesn't stand out a whole lot and I just didn't like the look of a lot of the nursing necklaces out there. It is really good quality and designed to be tugged on so it shouln't break, but if it does all you have to do is mail it back and they will restring it for free. I noticed that a lot of the sites will do that for you.

My DS loves this necklace eventhough it isn't brightly colored. I think he likes the smooth cool feel of the stones. We drove from NC to KS (about 23 hours) and I hung it from DSs car seat and it kept him busy for hours.
