I'm pregnant with my first and planning on BF'ing. I keep seeing banner ads for nursing necklaces and really like the idea of them, but I was wondering if they really are a nice thing to have or if the baby yanks on them and the mom finds the whole thing annoying, lol.

I just have a moment (long day at the hemophilia treatment center tomorrow for ds and myself), but I wanted to respond and say that my ds loves his nursing necklace. He plays with it while he nurses (if he's awake enough to), and it keeps him from getting distracted with everything else going on. Plus sometimes he plays with it when he's not nursing, too.

I recommend to get one and try it to see if it works for you!

Good luck and congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First off, HI William's Mom!!!! (best of luck tomorrow) I came here because you recommended the board!

Now to the OP, William's Mom actually put me onto nursing necklaces. I've made necklaces out of beads and such for a while now (just the supplies you get at craft stores like JoAnn's, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc). I actually made the jewelry for my attenedants in my wedding 4 years ago.

So based on what I could find described about nursing necklaces online I made one. Here are a few things I would look for:

*what type of thread/material they are held together/straded on
*type of clasp... I really really really like the magentic clasps as does my daughter.
* and the style... is it something you could wear just around your baby... I made something that I wear all the time and most people just go "OH my your baby has your necklace!" and I''m like it's hers!

HTH

I have to say that I have seen mix3d3m0ti0n5's homemade nursing necklace and it's gorgeous!

And when my ds saw it, he wanted it for his own! :LOL

So as you can tell, we definitely recommend them.

The one that I bought from a company is more "kiddy" oriented. It has cats and fish on it, and it's cute, and my ds loves it.

But I'm really looking forward to having one like mix3d3m0ti0n5 mentioned that looks like a pretty "grown-up" necklace that momma will love to wear everywhere, and that will be safe for baby to play with, too.

Oh I also wanted to add that the "better" nursing necklaces will have a break-away clasp so that if your dc pulls or yanks on the necklace, the clasp will just simply open, and momma won't have any pain from the necklace being yanked hard around her neck. The break away clasp also helps prevent strangulation.

However, even though these necklaces are "safe," I never let my ds play with it unless I'm with him and watching him.

HTH, too!

I made some too. I don't let him use it unless I'm wearing it, maybe I'm kinda paranoid about the strangle thing... I made my own and love it. If you make your own, you can choose everything that you like, and it's done in about 20 minutes. A GREAT pregnancy project! Just so you know, babies don't start playing w/toys or anything (other than boobs LOL) until 2-4 months, some even a bit later. Around 8 weeks they can start to grab stuff, usually. If you are wearing it from the get-go you baby will be super familiar w/it and won't be distracted, just will use it as part of your nursing experience. They are helpful for keeping their fingers from rolling (pinching) your breast while nursing. Congratulations on your pregnancy and I hope you have a beautiful birthing! Andy
