Okay this is def. a record for me on here, THREE posts in a row now! My mind is really going tonight

Someone at my DP's work was talking to him the other night. None of her children were vaccinated and all are in their teens now, perfectly healthy She was telling him that the nutrasweet in all diet cola's (maybe its in other things too, I'm not very educated on this yet) causes cancer yet the FDA still approves it. Is this true? If so, it wouldn't surprise me in the least. :

Yup. I'd say soda pop is the root of all evil. Watch out for the benzene as well:
http://www.organicconsumers.org/food...zene060303.cfm

I will have nothing to do with artificial sweeteners. My dh is a total diet coke addict and my 5 year old dd is always on his case about it, lol.

If I need something sweet I stick with sugar.
All things in moderation

I've seen that in action...I have a good friend that consumes it in soda in large amounts, and deals with bad fibro.

Is Nutrasweet aspartame? If so, google "Rumsfeld aspartame," you'll get lots of interesting reading there...

It took me FOREVER to convince my mother that many of her MS symptoms and Fibro , and pancreatitis symptoms would vanish if she gave up the diet soda.

I have a weakness for soda so I wasn't asking her to cave completely.

After two months she could walk without a cane , stand for long periods of time , and completely gave up her motorized wheelchair.

She's never gone back. I'm so proud of her.

Just to be even handed, I do have a friend who has never been a soda drinker and always felt aspartame and other fake sugars were poison. She does have MS, uses antioxidants and other supplements to treat. She has been able to stay off Rxs, never gets the flu shots that her doc tells her she needs
Anyway, no artificial sweeteners and yet still has MS.

I don't think anyone has said it is the ONLY cause.

I have a friend who has MS symptoms, including brain lesions, but not actually MS. She drinks several diet sodas a day and refuses to hear me when I've told her about the connection. Her reason? Her DH works for Mon$anto and they both believe that they'd never put out a product that could cause harm to people.

I wouldn't know any of these things...I'm not familiar with her current diet and we never talked about her childhood. She doesn't smoke, though. I'm pretty sure she's a vegetarian but that's all I really know.

That stuff is so dangerous. I won't touch it, not even one of those sugar-free peppermints. I wish more people would realize how bad it is for you. Here's a great link that gives a bunch of other links.
http://www.321recipes.com/aspartame.html
I should add that my parents befriended a man who worked on developing this stuff for public consumption back in the 70s and 80s; he told them to stop using it. He said they never did conclude where it goes in the body. That was enough to scare me almost nine years ago. I try to tell everyone I can about it.

If you want to hear about the politics of aspartame, click on this link and then on Rumsfeld's face.

You will be shocked that in spite of knowing how dangerous it is, he pushed it through and made millions in the process.

I have vertigo (maybe Menier's Disease) and all I know is that if I drink a diet coke or something similiar it makes me dizzy and feel weird. No thanks

Sugar in moderation! I like stevia (sweetleaf brand) in my iced teas--which being from the south we drink a lot of. I do confess to using some Splenda at times. Hey I'm not perfect. I tried to give it totally up but just couldn't...lol

Nutrasweet just freakin' tastes BAD, how do people even use that stuff?

Aspertame is Nutrasweet and it is nasty stuff. It's in diet soda and other sugar free foods. If you are a diabetic there really is not much choice, my mother consumes some artifical sweeteners, but limits it.
When I purchased Pedilyte (some years ago) it had aspertame in it!!!
Splenda or sucralose is just as bad and they are hiding it in stuff and not labeling it as having artifical sweetners
-- Green Giant Sweet Potato Cassarole was my first experience and it ticked me off
-- Jello pudding Sunday Toppers was my next find (dh bought them for ds2)
And it kills me that they are marketing it to children in the 1/3 less sugar cereals and the ads on TV for Splenda.

Splenda fizzes when you add it to Kool Aid (yes, once upon a time I bought Splenda while on WW and used it in Kool Aid both yuck and not in my house now). The chemical reaction scared me.

I wish regular soda didn't have HFCS in it, oh yeah, High Fructose Corn Syrup is also very, very bad. The health food store sodas have fructose and corn syrup -- I just want the soda I grew up with overseas that actually had sugar in it!

I think all the aspartame (nutrasweet) I was consuming in my diet soda (darn atkins hooey) was literally driving me insane. I traced back my major issues with depression and general sketchy behavior to shortly after I started drinking diet soda as opposed to regular soda. NOW, I can't stand either kind or any sort of artificial sweetner. (Although I'd like to try the stevia with my iced tea.. I seriously miss sweet tea!!) ITA with PP about them, if you want something sweet, just eat something with sugar and move on.. no point trying to fool your body! I read on the Unhindered Living site http://www.unhinderedliving.com/ about all the fun stuff aspartame does, like metabolize into formaldehyde (woohoo : ) and cause demyelination as well. Good times.

Either way, my little brother has always gotten migraines if he so much as chews a piece of gum with it in it, and strangely enough, my ds developed GERD while I was drinking that poison and breastfeeding him. I've felt better and been noticeably happier and more even keeled emotionally since I stopped drinking it. But my little man still has GERD.

I don't know if they cause cancer or not, but they just CAN'T be good for us! The way I see it, most things that are made in a lab somewhere, aren't going to be very good for us, so I don't do any artificial sweetners. Also, soda, diet and regular, are just bad in general for you. I never believed my dad when he told me as a kid, but now that I've looked in to it, it's scary.
