"Separating anatomy from what it means to be a man or a woman, New York City is moving forward with a plan to let people alter the sex on their birth certificate even if they have not had sex-change surgery."<br><br>

"The change would lead to many intriguing questions: For example, would a man who becomes a woman be able to marry another man? (Probably.) Would an adoption agency be able to uncover the original sex of a proposed parent? (Not without a court order.) Would a woman who becomes a man be able to fight in combat, or play in the National Football League? (These areas have yet to be explored.)"

Wow! That is a very aggressive move on their part. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/clap.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="clap">

Odd they have to change their name though, isn't it? Now I wonder what state will be the first to allow parents and individuals to decline picking a gender at all. Good for NY!

it's a big step in the right direction, but i'd really like to not have to choose either one. when i fill out forms, i leave gender blank. i have yet to be asked to fill it in <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/thumb.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="thumbs up">

I had always assumed that if a woman was able to play at that level she would be able to play in the NFL. However with a largely strength-and-size-based sport it would be very, very difficult. I know there are some women that play in NCAA football as place-kickers, though.

Yeah. To me it seems so backwards to have 'male or female' on things. It makes no sense to me at all.

Glad to hear it. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"><br><br>
I do agree with mshollyk, though, that it will be a great day when we as a society stop focusing on gender and pay attention to the person instead.

I was shocked that I hadn't heard about this and pleased when I saw it this morning. It's not even getting negative press (that I know of) yet. Is New York the first state to do this?? I think so, but have no idea. Anybody know?? What about abroad? (Thinking of more progressive countries like Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, etc.)

I think that it's a great move. I just always assumed those little boxes were more important for things like medical history (your risk of certain things) and statistical purposes (i.e. why are 70% of the people getting __ cancer in this county getting caner but only 15% of men?)
