As of yesterday I am considering a homebirth, and am looking for midwives. I'm in Missouri and knew beforehand that non-CNM midwives could not legally practice here. I didn't know this, however (from the friendsofmomidwives.org site):

Gimme a break... I can pay any crackpot on the street to attend my birth but I can't pay someone who actually knows what she's doing? Argh.
I think I'm going to get involved with them during the next legislative session. It seems they were much more successful this past session than they had been before, so there is hope for my backward state.

Home birth is not illegal. And, in an interesting twist of a court judgment, assisting a woman in labor is not illegal, even for pay-unless the birth assistant has training, skills, helpful equipment, or does this on a regular basis. So, it is legal to have a birth at home and to be attended by an attendant, so long as that person is not helpful. |
