How do I keep ointment/salve on a 5 mos hand? and out of her mouth?

I've tried putting a bandaid over it, but it just oozes out.

what about a little gauze wrap? I can't think of anything other than to distract her after putting it on ?

ETA: oh also, what about just rubbing it in while holding her hand? What kind of herbs are used for the salve?

It's calendula with TTO added. I need to leave it on for at least 4 hrs.

Winnie's 4-1/2 mo old but we still have the large sleeping gowns with the little foldover hand mitten. Do you have any of those? If not, and the gauze doesn't work, I'd put a sock on her fist
