OK, I recently got several dyed prefolds and they're so pretty! But I'm worried about the dyes on my son's bottom. Is my concern founded?! He's got little red dots on his skin. Is it from the dipes? What is procion dye anyhow? Are we talkin major cancer causin stuff or not? And is it likely that they are causing the rash, or just something else?

Last time I got worried like this I cut into my fleece topped sugarpeas soaker and totally mutilated a very nice diaper! Someone set me straight before I do something rash.
No pun intended...he he he, I really didn't realize I had said that until I typed it! : )

well, if anyone has super sensitive skin any extra chemicals can irritate them. from our dying experiences i worry more about the chemicals used in the dying process than just the dye! if you're really concerned, put the dyed dipes away in a safe place (no cutting necessary!!) and give plain old cpf's a try. if the rash doesn't clear up it is probably something else. and if it does, give it a week or two and try them again. this will determine if it was coincidence or not.

My train of thought is that ds's clothes are not white, so they've been dyed somewhere along the line, so the dye won't bother him.

One question for you though... When your ds has little red dots on his skin, is it right where he's wet the diaper? Are you using PUL covers? If ds is in a saturated diaper too long before we have a chance to change him, he'll get a little heat rash (and we use ME AF). I solve that with letting him run around without a cover and it's usually gone by bedtime. I'd let him run around naked, but I just don't trust him.

I prefer plain inners on diapers. I dont see it as the same as clothing because the clothing isn't against the same areas and won't be saturated in urine (or other) against the skin.

But then I also have children that tend to be very sensitive to lots of things.

We also do only use wool for covers because Alexander ended up with rashes when I tried PUL

we pretty much only use wool so its not from pul. I try to change him often. But come to think of it, it was hot yesterday. maybe that had somethingto do with it. It is better today. maybe not from the dipes? not sure yet. It happened another time. I've only been using these prefolds for a short time. I'll watch it though. I can see your point, pp. I may err on that side of things. I'll have to give it some more thought.

I don't think you're being overly paranoid. I have the same worries, and about microfleece too. But I love the fabrics and colors and use them anyway. Then think I'm a bad mom. <<sigh>> Okay, now I'm pushing it back out of my mind again...

Ok, I think I'd feel most at peace if I use the unbleached undyed dipes most of the time and do the dying and fun colors on the wool instead of the diaper which touches his skin/gets wet on. And I typically only use the micro when out, which works well for us. I suppose I may end up selling some of these dyed ones. Thanks for helping me clear my head!

Yes, when I make my fitteds I dye the outer body fabric first (hemp or sherpa) and then make a snap in soaker and inner body layer that is undyed (and I use procion dyes and wash tons after dyeing to get all the chemicals out). That way the dye doesn't touch the skin.
