OK, mine can't be the only one who does this...

But it drives me NUTS!

Sometimes when DS is falling asleep for naptime or bedtime, he finds the single worst spot for him to receive fresh air to breathe...like literally smashing his face nose down into the pillow or mattress (I tried removing the pillow thinking that would help, but he just smashed harder into the mattress) with his hands covering his face, or his head wedged underneath my arm, or covering/smashing his face with a stuffed animal, or what have you.

it's not so much that I'm afraid that he's goign to suffocate himself (there is SOME air getting in there, I'm sure, plus he's 2 yrs+), it's just that breathing all that stale, hot, rebreathed air can't be good for him, can it?

I usually just try to suggest to him that he'd probably feel better and breathe better without his nose and mouth covered, and he usually is amenable to some modification in his position, but WHAT is UP with him??

Hopefully I'm not the only one with a toddler with this bizarre behavior - it seems so anti-survival instinct or something, and for some reason really bothers me. Probably just one of the thousands of things I'll just have to get over and let go.

If mine does that, I wait till he falls asleep, then sneak in and adjust things to suit me. I figure it goes with the curled-up, butt-in-the-air sleeping position...he falls asleep as if he's still in the womb, and he didn't need air then, did he?

My ds does this too. I freak out looking at him because I am sooo claustrophobic and it looks really uncomfortable. I think it reminds him of being on the breast, having somewhere warm and close to put his face in.
Well, at least I'm not totally alone. Your thoughts behind it make sense, too. Thanks, ladies!!!
butt-up-in-the-air-face-smashed-up-against-the-pillow sleeper here, too.

ours moves around enough while he's sleeping, so that after a little while, his face is away from the pillow enough. i think he just likes something up by his face now. maybe it's the remembrance of the ma-milks time...
