I have hasimotos-diagnosed via ultrasound and I know I have the antibodies. My levels have always been in the normal range..Should I be taking synthroid? Some dr's tell me yes-other's said no..Thanks in advance! Laura

You've had an antibody blood test?

I would think if your levels are normal, then you don't need synthroid. Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disease, which means it's genetic and you've always had it since birth. Some people with autoimmune diseases are lucky and their disease is never triggered. Some are unlucky (like me, I have Graves' and was very sick) and their disease is triggered by something and becomes active. Until your levels are abnormal, I would assume your disease is not active, and you don't need to worry about treatment with synthroid.

If you don't need synthroid to boost your thyroid hormones, it's not a good idea to take it because you can end up with too much hormone which will make you hyperthyroid, another undesirable state.
