Specifically for a holiday party we are having here on the 16th for 40 people.

The rest of my house is in pretty good shape after a lot of effort the past year or two. We just redid our dining room and it is *perfect* and the the way I have always wanted it. Living room is also great.

The kitchen...well, it needs some work. It's not horrible but it seems to be the catch-all for everything, esp. DH's crap and the 9 bazillion art projects my kids do a week. I have slowly been working my way from one end of the counter to the other. Putting stuff away, or throwing it out. It's looking a lot better. I envy people with perfectly clear counters, though. I just don't have the room to store all my appliances in a cupboard or closet.

The family room adjoins the kitchen and it is basically a playroom. Therefore it tends to get messed up everyday, needless to say. I've put toys in storage but there just doesn't seem to be a right way to get it organized without spending a bundle on shelving or baskets and whathaveyou.

In addition, there are bookcases in the back of the room that DH has cluttered up, and my son, who is following in his footsteps, is doing the same to his shelves that I alloted to him for storage. He won't throw anything away and as a result things are overflowing..

OK, I know I'm rambling here and probably not giving enough information for anyone to really be helpful. I've got just these two areas to get shipshape if I could just 1) find the time and 2) figure out how to do it without throwing out or putting in storage these precious bits of scraps and junk that my DH and DS need to hold onto!

:

Hey mamavegan,

I actually made some progress today. I can't believe it. I put the kids at the kitchen table with playdough and art supplies and cleared EVERYTHING off the kitchen counters. I then used Softscrub to clean them and the backsplashes. They were pretty badly stained here and there (they are old) so I really had to use it. I cleaned everything before putting it back on the counter--ran stuff through dishwasher if possible. I also removed some things from the counter so that they would look less cluttered. Washed the sink window and curtains. Cleaned off the top of the refrigerator. DH was amazed when he came home!

The only thing I need to do now is use Murphy's Oil Soap on the cabinets.

After that, I'll attack the family room. The bookcases/toy shelves in the back of the room are driving me batty. They are such an eyesore!

I can't believe how great my kids were while I did this. Possibly because I explained I was getting the house ready for our big party, and they are really excited about it!

So how are you doing with your progress? Any news yet?

Rainbowbird,

I haven't started yet! I had a playgroup Friday, so was up making cupcakes Thursday night. I cleaned up that mess Friday afternoon. Today, I need to bake cupcakes for a bday party tomorrow! I think this project will have to get pushed back for another day or so. I did manage to get some general decluttering done, but my kitchen really needs major decluttering and a deep clean. I'm hosting a playgroup next Friday, so I'd really like it to be done by then.

I'll post when I make some pogress. I may get brave enough to post pics as well, we'll see!

I was just making excuses of how I won't have time to work on the kitchen and now I've just finished with some work there.

I asked my husband for 15 minutes of his time (and I set a timer.) He came into the kitchen with me and we opened each cabinet one at a time and set a goal to pull out 1 item from each cabinet and drawer that we could live without. Some cabinets were only holding 1 large item or a few items that we always use, so they were omitted from the rule for now. It was important for me to get his input, because he cooks often as well. We removed 11 items in all.

After we finished, I took 5 minutes and rearranged some of my baking items and mixing bowls in 2 large cabinets. Now, all of my pyrex is together with their lids to the side of them. Some of my baking items are seperated, but still orderly. If I have time, I'll post pics tomorrow and see if I can garnish some suggestions to make it better ~ if that's ok, since this is your thread.

It sounds like you've just about finished cleaning your kitchen! I have some organizational things to work on, but that will come with time. I'd like to get a deep clean going in there and will try to get started on that tomorrow.

I'll keep at it while you knock out your family room. You are on a roll!

Wow, good job, mamavegan!

I still have my baking cupboard to declutter. It's a mess. And I have to wash the cabinets. Sunlight glare is not kind to them.

The family room still awaits me. Those shelves are so intimidating, and DH has stuff all over them, too, so I need his input.

Luckily, two friends have offered to help me out this week by either cleaning or watching the kids. So I can hopefully get a little more done that way.

The party is a week from today!

Keep posting your progress!

Update: OK, so the kitchen is just about done, except for wiping down cabinet doors and organizing the pot cupboard. And the family room, which I was dreading, is almost done, too! I went through the books yesterday and organized them, and it looks so much better. Then last night DH and I went through the middle shelves, mostly cluttered with his stuff and DS' stuff, and it took all of.....20 minutes!!! 20 min. to clean something that has been bothering me for months. I know, flylady says it all the time. Just set the timer and do it. We didn't use a timer but it took no time at all.

The downstairs is almost decluttered now!

My kitchen still isn't finished, but I did get a good start on cleaning it today. I've scrubbed all the counter tops, the range, the oven & racks, and also cleaned out the oven drawer and beneath it. I made room for the toaster in a cabinet just above where it usually sits on the counter top. I've also moved the sugar, tea, and coffee into the pantry and/or near the coffee & tea mugs. My sink is shined and my goal is to keep it and the counters clean and clear every night before I go to sleep and as much as possible throughout the day.

I plan to clean out the fridge and the pantry soonish. I need to focus on other parts of the house for now for our playgroup Friday.
