I am having a UP and planning a UC and I finally got in contact with someone that knows the logistics of registering a birth after a UC with no pre-natal care...
Anyways... one of the things that I need is a proof of pregnancy from a doctor that deals with pregnancy and birth (there are no family docs taking patients so that would mean an OB)... if I don't get it then the alternative is to have a vaginal exam after the birth which states that I gave birth recently... (I don't want that!!) So the lesser of two evils IMO is to go see a doc at least once (I can't see a midwife for this since midwifes will not see anyone that will not be giving birth in their attendance...)
So, when should I go... now or later? I feel like going soon and getting it over with.. that way there might be less questions about where I am going to give birth etc because I still have time...
Also, having my name in the local OB's office would also mean that I would have someone to check the baby after the birth to confirm that the baby is alive and well (the other requirement for the process)..
I do have a family doc in Montreal (about an hour away) but I am a bit scared to go see him for the letter since I want to maintain a good working relationship with him...

Anyways... WWYD?

Someone on another board talked to a chiropractor and since they are able to do care on newborns and infants, she is seeing the chiropractor on and off in her pregnancy and will take the baby there a day or two after birth. he told her that he would write up a thing stating she was pregnant and when she gave birth. I'm not sure if that is an option for you or not, but hopefully it helps.

The local health department doesn't couldn't apply here since we don't have that kind of system... I have heard that it works int he US though...

The Chiro is a good idea but it seems that it is not always accepted as an official document... though I think that I am going to ask anyways...
I go to a Chiro quite often at the moment because my back is sore... there are two chiros in the practice (they are married) and the girl specializes in ped care but is due about a week before me... but I know that her partner also does infants..

what I was wondering is why are they so weird? if they have doubts, why not DNA test? I mean I do realise that rarely does MATERNITY need to be established but god, if they wont accept prego pics, birth videos, etc...(a lot of places will, I heard but god, if they dont.) what if you really, like me, hate doctors? then how do you "prove" it's yours? and while here I am, not seena dr yet (nor am I going to unless a prob arises) so are they gonna refuse to accept my kid as mine? and then what, get a police investigation into whose child I might have stolen going? LOL.

I have no clue about they are so weird... well of course they don't want to register a kidnapped newborn, but really... just look at any postpartum mom's belly in the few weeks after birth!

Anyways.... I hate doctors and I really would want to avoid going but if I have to then I guess I will have to...

As for other places... well in Canada we have health insurance and all OB's and other doctors are covered so there are no free-clinics or anything like that... to get a proof of pregnancy for a work leave etc you have to see a doctor or midwife...

LOL... that would be funny... just to see there face... of course though everything is done by mail so I wouldn't even be able to see the reaction..

Are there any walk in clinics?

Then you just walk in and go "Gimme a stick to pee on, you sign this form, and I'll be on my way"

No... well there are walkins but they don't do pee tests there... they would send you to an OB... (and the walkin clinic here is in the same building as the OB anyways)

Well that just sucks balls. How far are you from Ottawa? If you're up for a little drive, you can go to a walk in clinic across the river and they'd do it for ya. Things are a bit different in Ontario. Heck you could even get a Nurse Practitioner to do it for you

You have to wait till tomorrow though. Everything is closed that side of the river today...

I am about 4 hours from Ottawa...
(and then of course I would have to pay for the clinic because I am pretty sure that I can't use my quebec healthcare card in Ont...) I couldn't in Manitoba.. if I was closer that would have been a good idea though!! thanks!

You'd get reimbursed by the Quebec govt. Quebec is funny that way. They wont accept any health cards from OOP they are like "Pay us, here's the receipt and you'll have to get your money back from your province when you get back" and vice versa. It's crazy. Lets say if we got posted to Baggotville, I'd be 3 months without coverage (DND doesn't pay for me except for perscriptions) Pregnant, no coverage, and a DH who's leary of even a MW attended homebirth let alone an UP/UC...I've been pretty much UP up till moving here. And DH woudl have went
: at the thought of continuing the UP up till the birth then doing the whole "OMGZOOORZ no Prenatal?" drill at the hospital, not to mention the crappy service I would have gotten for being Anglo in Baggotville, probably woulda gotten the whole crap on a platter combo from them, topped up with a nice juicy 4th degree medio-lateral Episiotomy with a shoddy repair job along with not one but two husband knots so "La Maudit Anglo" wouldn't reproduce again. I think he would have just agreed for a UC on that premise alone...

They *might* have changed it...but I doubt it.

But you saw the type of hospital that miltary mommas deliver in....well..now you see why I choose to keep my yap shut about my homebirth. With conditions like *That* no wonder they are like "OMG I would have died if I were home" if you think about it...

It sounds like you probably have what you need, but wanted to share this with you, regarding this:

"Anyways... one of the things that I need is a proof of pregnancy from a doctor that deals with pregnancy and birth ..."

Wisconsin, US, has this same requirement and I simply got signatures from my regular chiro, whom I saw throughout my pregnancy and right after the birth (4 days or so). I had to submit the paperwork within one week after the birth, and I sent it on the seventh day. We awaited, a bit nervously, to see if the certification would be accepted without hassle, and it was. No problems.

I asked my Chiro yesterday at DH's and DS's appt and he doesn't think that he is allowed to do it, but if I find out that he can then he is more then willing to sign... then I asked him if I would be able to go see him after ht ebirth for the new babe (he is going to be a first time dad around the same time) and he said that he would gladly do it and he would even come to our house!

Anyways... if he can do it then I will have so much less stress... I DON'T want to go see an OB...
