I just feel like I'm missing out on some big secret here and I'm frustrated!

First off, I always snappi my pfs and usually use the angel fold (is that what it's called?), occasionally the bikini twist. Premium size pfs, btw. I am diapering a 21 month old toddler boy who "gifts" me at least twice a day with big, messy, peanut-butter-consistency poops, yuck! : And it ALWAYS leaks out onto my covers, darn it!

Now, I knew to expect leakage if I only folded and didn't fasten -- there were ample warnings to that effect here -- but I snappi every time, nice and tight. Doesn't seem to matter one bit! I really want to figure this out b/c I've made him 5 lovely wool covers/soakers in the past few weeks but haven't tried them out yet except at night b/c I have no interest in having to wash them every time they're used, kwim?

The poop MUST be contained!!!!!

Help me!

I want to know how you get a Premium size prefold to fit on a toddler? My 5 month old (17lbs) has a buddah belly. I snappi, but there isn't a ton of leftover material in the waist area. Of course there is tons in the rise and I have to fold over. They should make extra wide ones for chubb-o's like I have, LOL!

Well, he's a lean toddler, LOL -- I think he's around 22 lbs. and has NO belly or thighs, he really slimmed out when he began walking, just like my other two, but I understand what you're saying! I DO have to pull on those "wings" pretty tightly in order to have enough material to wrap around to the front to snappi. Sometimes I help that by gently fanning the top front a bit so I don't have as far to go to get the sides to meet the front -- does that make sense? Then again, this is coming from a woman who can't contain toddler poop in a snappied pf, so maybe I'm not the best one to be giving advice, LOL!

OK, based on the fact this has gotten a bunch of views and only one reply, am I to assume that there IS no magic secret and the rest of you pf users are also dealing with leaky poop? Or does no one online tonight use pfs?

Or do I smell and no one wants to tell me, LOL?

Hehe, I viewed this thread without responding. I have the same problem you do, and keep hoping somebody posted the trick! The worst is when I'm using a pull-on cover and it is all poopy and I have to clean poop off of ds's legs, feet, the floor, myself.

The last couple of days have been nice, though. Nice firm poop that falls right off.

Sorry I can't be of much help! I only have experience with my 6 week old- we usually avoid poop on the covers by making the diaper VERY TIGHT around the legs, because it always loosens up when he moves around or the diaper gets wet. Whenever dh does a diaper change, though, we are certain to have a poop leakage because he doesn't wrap it tight enough. We've had similar luck with both the angel and twist folds, one doesn't seem better than the other.

Well, I keep checking back to see what the magic solution is. LOL!

Have you checked out Karen's cloth diapering page? Maybe her pointers will help you out. I should go look for another refresher course myself....

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/kfegelman/index.htm

Ah, nice firm poop! I dream of the day when I'll get nice, firm poop, LOL!

Okay, that didn't sound very good :LOL, but really, my kids don't seem to know HOW to produce "normal" poop, I swear! I love it when I luck out and get the occasional "nugget" instead of gooey mess.

And now that you all find me offically insane for discussing poop in this detail, I'm going to bed! Maybe the magic solution will be posted while I sleep -- a gal can dream, can't she?

Well, i figure the *cover* is meant to contain the poop, so who cares it it escapes the diaper, as long as it stays in the cover!

I always trifold the pf, spread out the back part and the front and pin or snappi. Most poop stays in, if some comes out on the cover tho, it doesnt bother me.

But when the cover is wool, it REALLY sux to get poop on it! :LOL I'm looking for a solution, too! I have so many pretty prefolds that have just been sitting in a pile the past few days since dd decided to start having explosive bf poops 4 times a day again! All of her covers are wool and I'm not taking any chances!

I would try the trifold fold, fanned out in the butt area as the other poster explained... this might work to get the legs a bit tighter...I am not familar with the Angel fold you mentioned but I would think the bikini twist would have a higher percentage of leaking poo. Maybe there isn't a solution since he is a toddler and since toddlers are walking and wiggling a lot more than a less mobile child, so it is hard to contain the messes inside one of them.

Also, I know this isn't always an option for everyone, but I switched to fitteds when my dd was 5 months old but when we used prefolds we did the trifold fold and it did contain her messes.

Good luck!

You are right there! I tend to NOT use prefolds under wool soakers, thats a mess waiting to happen. But I use wool covers w/prefolds and yes sometimes we get poop on them, but never alot.

Here's what I used to do with the boys when they were toddlers in prefolds

Lay diaper down on ground, lay kid on top, roll sides of diaper in so they make a nice barrier again the side of the behind, then bring up through legs like normal and snappi tight. The rolls act like a bumper and stop the poo from shooting out sidesways. Unless they had a really huge blowot, this always worked for me (I can take pics if this doesn't make any sense, just LMK, I haven't had coffee yet this AM, LOL)

nak....I tuck the sides in the back after pinning it on DS which kind of makes a pocket (I do it withevery fold I use). My son has super huge/messy poops so sometimes it holds it all, sometimes not.

Maybe I am blessed, maybe I am just really good-but my ds has the toddler poo and I haven't had one escape yet! YEAH ME! I always fold the sides in as a barrier-and then when he is standing up I tuck them in even more-heck, I fold em in so much they are so trim that the poo usually goes forward for lack of anywhere else I guess. I can't snappi a premium on my chubbo 35lber-but I pin (I can even use an infant size on him-super trim and works great-just a pin on either side and he is set). I would post pics, but I am not that talented LOL
I have a love-hate relationship. Currently I am loving. Here is what helps in my exp. First, I would size up to Toddler. I find that the month or two after I size up I have less mess! Second...if back poo is an issue, fold down the back just 3/4-1 inch. Third...perfect the poo pocket! W/ the newspaper/angel fold, make sure the sides are generously flared out when you fold it up, make sure that the butt hole is well between the pleats and not over one. In this photo, in figure 5,
http://www.healthpursuit.com/folding_cloth_diapers.html

the part between the flaps is the pocket. Flare out those flaps so that they are on the thighs when you fold it up, and no where near or under the butt opening.
This helps: after a few messes, take the diaper off and do not unfold-keep it intact and set it aside. Then, look at where the mess happened-you can tell alot about how to fold next time by doing this. Try pins. I just got the hang of pins, and boy am I glad. The legs are never snugger! Pull the side fabric over as tight as you can get it. HOld it firmly-placing fingers under the diaper and thumb over the side part. Insterting...first, angle the opening away from the baby, but not totally to the side. Make the opening kinda up towards the baby's belly but angled at the side-like 45 degrees or more. Be sure to insert the pin through the side flap and diaper front first. Be sure to insert through the side flap!-If you insert through the diaper then through the side flap, it will slide, and the legs will be loose. I wish I could explain it better! See the pins in figure 6 of the illustration-that is right. See where they are inserted? Lastly, get a narrower cover-I have more luck when the elastic is right at or barely over the leg openings. Good luck!

I use the Angel wing fold from Karens page. When you pull the front flap up make sure that the back part of the prefold is laying flat and wide open. This forms a "gusset" and when you snapppi or pin make sure to pull really snug. I have been able to contain most poopies this way. I hope that description made sense
