Okay...knit or woven? Do you have a preference?

I have a really cute woven print "hyena" WAHM fitted, but the first time I washed it, it faded terribly.
Now it just looks all worn and old.

So, does this happen with all woven fabrics? I tend to get only knits now. I love that they are soft and cozy. They also seem to be a lot more colorfast? Is there a way to keep wovens from fading? And...which do you prefer?

As for the fading, I think it depends on the fabric. I've had some fade terribly and some stay bright and crisp wash after wash. I prefer knits, I think they fit better and I like how they have a bit of stretch.
I've been wondering about this too, and specifically what the difference is. So, I'm jsut subscribing! thanks. . .
I love the stretchiness of knit, but will buy woven if I can't get the print (i.e. sushi) in a knit...

I love my wovens because they don't fade at all. My knits faded horribly and got pilly and old looking. Weird!
It totally depends on the quality of the fabric. I only have ONE woven diaper that is faded and like Angelica, almost all my knits look old and pilly

I guess I've gotten lucky with knits because I've never had them get pilly on me. Most of the wovens we've had faded really quickly except the ones form Luke's Drawers. She has awesome, really bright prints, and we've never had them fade on us. I just prefer the stretch of knit though.
I like them both.I like my wovens for the bold and beautiful colors.Haven't had much fading.I like my knits for their stretch and softness although they do get pilly.Heck if it's on a diaper then I like it.

:LOL
Of the diapers I have purchased new (I am assuming most fabrics will fade with enough wash and wear), I only have one woven that faded prematurely (in the first wash) and one knit that faded prematurely (again, in the first wash). Both of these were part of a larger orderand the others still look great. So, it seems to be quality of fabric, woven or knit.
How do you tell the difference? I have only had one print that faded horribly.

its hard to tell, you can often tell by fabric thickness, but sometimes the thicker wovens fade too. If you are buying the actual wovens themself, I would stick to name brand fabrics (wovens from walmart and hobby lobby do not count :LOL -- they usually get the "second" quality runs from larger fabric companies and the weave isnt as tight). If you are just shopping for diapers the only real way to know is to ask the WAHM I would guess. The quality of a woven is a lot like the quality of bed sheets, lol... the higher the thread count the better

Knits seem to be a crap shoot either way, LOL

I like PRR knits and love when people advertise that it is PRR because then I know it will hold up nicely
I also like Carter's Knits

I'd have to agree alot of it has to do with fabric quality. That being said, even if you spend alot per yard on a fabric there is no guarantee it won't fade quickly. There are some tried and true 'brands' of fabrics I find don't fade and hold up better to cheaper fabrics. Typically the good stuff costs more but I've lucked out a few times.. with fabric you never know until you wash it.. I like it when a WAHM prewashes fabrics so if it fades horribly on the first wash they don't use it on their products. But not everyone likes to prewash/shrink their fabrics, personal preference I guess. If it's an AIO shell you could always wash it on cold or warm since it doesn't get as saturated to help preserve the bright colors. Also hanging to dry will help (not in the sun though, that will surely fade bright, happy prints in most cases) as the heat from the dryer helps fade.
I love stretchy knits but especially interlocks for my little ones (I have yet to find an interlock that pills), plus it's also a bonus to me that they can wear them longer due to the stretch.

Sorry this is such a long reply..

I like both but knits have a bit of stretch and may fit a little longer. For covers I'll have either, dont care. If I were buying fitteds I'd go for the knits, not sure why. That said, I think I must be the only person on this board who hates prints for fitted diapers! I just love them pure and plain, I save my prints for the outer cover or for aio's.

It totally depends on the quality of the fabric. I did make some covers - for some I used Rugby knit which is a polycotton blend and they're fabulous. For the others I used cotton interlock which pilled horribly first wash. I tossed those ones.
Knit for fitted dipes and woven for AIOs. I only have one knit for an AIO, had to get it bc it is a train print for DS.
All my dipes look pretty good except for flannel, flannel seems to fade and get pilly for me but that is it!
what printed fabic is better for water-proofness, knit or woven??
I have some woven aio's that wick really bad..
what is pul (fuzzi bunz) made out of??
