I am 22 years old and 11 weeks pregnant with my first, I was really hoping, and still am, that I will be able to have a home birth, the problem is that I'm running out of midwives to contact. I am due on April 29th and so far all of the midwives in Olympia and the surrounding area are busy at the end of april and the beginning of may. I even attempted to find an OB, but if I am going to go that route I would really like a woman and it seems like most of those are taken so far.

Does anyone have any suggestions, I'm feeling a little lost at the moment?

Did you try contacting Ann Olsen? Here's the link to her website.

http://www.midwifeann.com/

She catches both home birth babies and babies born at Tacoma Birthing Inn.

Good luck, :
I live in the northern end of Lacey and had my youngest at the Birthing Inn in Tacoma but I know my midwife was willing to come down for a homebirth too. Dawn Wadleigh. I think the Birthing Inn in general might be able to put you in contact with Tacoma midwives who you could contact to see if they practice in this area. I also had Nancy Spencer from the Lake Tapps area and she was willing to come to Lacey. She has her own birth center out there too (right on the lake, it's gorgeous!). She's more medical oriented, which with my first birth when I was 22 I found reassuring. (She also has more of a conservative Christian clientele, although I never felt uncomfortable with her as a crunchy pagan.) By my last baby I just wanted someone to hang back and watch and be there if something went wrong, that was more Dawn's style. I really felt open to talking to her more too.

There was also a midwife in Yelm and one out by Alder Lake that practice in this area, don't remember names, sorry.

We are in Chehalis and there is a midwife named Laura Hamilton, her office is on Highway 508 off the freeway. I have a few friends who've delivered there at her home office. Maybe you could call her and see if she'd come to you for homebirth or if she knows of anyone else that way. I am delivering at Providence myself ( a nurse there I have known since I was a baby so I'm really comfortable going there and having her help me deliver) Hope that helps and you can find someone. Oh, also at Southsound Women Care they do have some female OB's.

I couldn't recommend Nancy after attending a homebirth with her and her resulting lack of care for my client, I would suggest avoiding her, personally.

Are any of the midwives who are saying they're busy giving referrals to anyone local to you?

My friend knows the area real well and might have some possible options for you, let me ask her. (I'm in Bremerton, she's in Lacey.)

Amanda Feldmann, a midwife who has been known to come to Olympia for births. Her office is in Renton.

I second Ann. She is an amazing woman and midwife.

I used one of the previously mentioned Tacoma midwives with my last birth. There wont be a sequel. :

I really recommend that you meet with all the midwives that will come to you personally and make sure to ask them about all the questions that are important to you.

Good luck with your search and congrats on your pregnancy!

Thank you everyone, I did get quite a few referrals from the midwives I was calling, it's just that everyone I talked to is busy in April/May. Luckily I got a hold of Gretchen Jones in Eatonville and I live in Tenino so it should work out fine. I am super excited I have my first meeting with her this week

I had Laura Hamilton for my last birth and I loved her.

I have also heard really wonderful things about people who have attended births with Gretchen Jones, even though I don't know her myself.

Wish I'd used Laura Hamilton! A good friend of mine used her for her 3 births. For her first, my friend drove up from California at the beginning of labor, just to use her.

I started with Nancy but she felt too medical for me. Alas I chose the wrong practice to transfer to (an Olympia practice now run by the "younger" one that attended me...the older one from the practice has since retired) and directly thanks to them future births will be HBACs but more likely UBACs for me.

I'm glad you found Gretchen!

I also second Ann, Dawn, and Amanda. I haven't yet met Laura.

I was going to suggest Gretchen. She's fabulous. The other midwife around here who has a flawless reputation is Audrey Levine in Olympia. I really like them both and think you'd do well with either of them.

Can you please give me a bit more info about your experience with Nancy Spencer? I'm still trying to find a midwife, and am meeting with Nancy next week.
