*sigh* I hope they don't repeal it.

I just wish we had a lawmaker that brave in Iowa. Attended homebirths are illegal in Iowa...heck I recently learned if I have a homebirth and my DH is there he would loose his EMT license.

He is spot on....and I have high regard for this man. Unfortunately he'll probably pay a price on his political career for this.

Is anyone surprised that a doctor noticed the bit about midwifery?

"It was only after the final vote that Democratic Rep. Sam Page, a Creve Coeur doctor, noticed the midwifery language and brought it to colleagues' attention. By then, it was too late to debate. "

Obviously I support midwifery (second-born was a homebirf)

Is "sneaking" stuff into a bill common, though? It seems uncool on the face of it, but perhaps it's just par for the course.

so why is it ok to "sneak" in language into bills that are for things like, immunity from lawsuits for drug companies, think S1873?

But this is not ok?

Are you asking me or some theoretical person that thinks that's OK?

just a theoretical question

it seems lots of bills have had things "sneaked" (is that a word?) into them, mostly things that piss off the public. Like the liability shield thing. And there have been many others in the name of "national security" that have only done bad things. And when people realized what they have just signed into law, they go "oh well, whats done is done"

But somehow, this is different. It wouldnt surprise me in the slightest if the senators said "we didnt know, we need to re-vote" and it happens.

Sigh.

Yes.

Also, it seems to have been "snuck in" only in that its presence was not advertised; it wasn't even an 11th hour addition.

I have heard of this practice before but I don't know specifically how frequently it happens, especially with controversial issues.

I have to agree with you, I don't think it's the greatest way to further the cause, personally. It seems likely to me that they will get this repealed and we'll

If I signed a contract with a company and then later realized there was something in there I didn't like I would be SOL and it would be my fault for not reading it.

I think the same should go for this. If they didn't like all the language in it, they should have READ IT THEMSELVES; Not relied on what someone else told them it said. It is their own fault and it should NOT be allowed to be repealed.

Wow. I can see why there was an outcry, because of the sneaky nature of what he did.

However....I can totally understand why he did it and I absolutely support him for trying to get this out there.

When we have another baby, I want to have it in a birth center attended by a lay midwife. The midwife I used for my last pg (before my loss) was VERY knowledgeable and would have NEVER allowed me to have a homebirth if my baby were premature or there were issues. If it were an emergency, an ambulance would have been called while she was attending me.
It's a shame that the opponents to this language are using ONE example of someone not using good judgement as a reason to not allow legal, knowledgeable, certified midwives to do the job they've done for thousands of years.

So that means that DEMs will be legal and there will be a process for licensure without becoming a CNM? What a victory for the expecting mamas in Missouri!!!!!!!!!

This isn't an "outcry", it's a bunch of whining. This is VERY common, in fact I bet you could go to every legislator with a stack of legislation they signed and find more than one line that they didn't know was in everyone. Sometimes things make it into a bill when it is in a joint committee (both houses mesh their separate bills on same topic into one bill) that never see a floor vote. The legislature had days (a week, I think) to read this bill, and now they look like dopes who don't read the legislation they sign.

Seems like his opponents are just poisoning the well.
