Greetings all,
I must share this.... I have been soooooo
: all day. Yes, this story is a bit long, ignorant medical professionals need more training in intact males!

Here is the situation,
Friend takes her intact son to the ER due to a 105.2 tempature. When she first gets there they do Xrays of his chest.... as she is waiting on the results I arrive. The doctor comes in (woman mind you) and says "his chest is fine, lets have a look at his ears now"....
, umm ok, why not check his ears when he arrived (hour and a half earlier). ears are fine.

So here is where the mom and I get all pissy with the dr. and nurses....

Doc says we need to do blood work and a urine catch. Mom says ok, I said to mom... D you know they are going to pull his foreskin back to do the cath. right?... she
: and says WHAT??!?!?!... then questions doctor about it. Doc says yep... mom tells doc that will not happen, she will not allow the foresking to be manupalated.. the doc left, nurse comes in...

The stupid people are telling me and my friend that she should have been pulling back his foreskin for the past 7 months and cleaning it out with a Q-tip
....nurse tells D that the doctor has discussed it with another doc and that she should be forcably retracting him.... I said "well I bet both of them docs are circed"...she replied with well you arnt... I looked right at her and said "yes, you are correct, my mother was not in to mutalating my body and choose not to circ me" :LOL nurse was pissed and left.

After them telling her HOW IT IS SUPOSE TO BE DONE.. and her telling them how it WAS GOING TO BE DONE.. mom lets the doc look at the babys penis... this is how freaking completely stupid this damn doctor is... she looks at his penis and says..

"Oh wow mommy, what is wrong with his penis, it is deformed."
D says what do you mean, as she is trying to look also while holding baby on her lap... getting upset.
Doctor points to the head of his penis and says, "look, it is deformed under the skin cause you have not retracted and cleaned him, now I have to wonder if he is sick because of this."
D says to the doctor, "Have you never seen a damn uncirc penis before, that is the head of his penis, looks just the same as it would if there was no skin over it... can you not see plain as day the outline of his head.?"

I walked out of the room and returned a few minutes later....
there was a cath kit on the table. D says omg C.. look at what that says.
OMG was right... on the WARNING lable is states this product is known to cause cancer, birth defects, and reproductive problems in California ( why there and not other states I dunno).

So, the nurse returns and I questioned it... she looks at me and says, " you have been argumentative since you came in here, this baby is my # 1 concern, not you and your attitude."
: WTF!!!... so I replied to her with, "Well I am sorry, I am concerned about my nephew (not really) not being able to reproduce and or ending up with cancer. I am sorry you think I am argumentive but I do not agree with molesting little boys. Excuse me, little girls also for that matter."

That nurse was sooo pissed at me. She told me that I had to leave the hosp. I said "excuse me?" ...she went and got an officer to escort me out of the hospital. My friend said after I left the nurse was shaking so bad she could not put the other IV bag on the hook :LOL

THEN... as if this wasnt enough... .
Mom agreed to a urine catch as long as they did not retract him.

There is the doc trying to put the cath in and having a male nurse telling her HOW TO DO IT... she had NEVER DONE A CATH ON A INTACT MALE.. omfg!!!!!!!

Why Why Why are they soooo damn stupid???

Good for you for protecting your nephew!

And the answer to your question is....as you know....NOBODY teaches them.
And they don't know what they don't know...and ASSume they know what they're doing.

Disclaimer - obviously some know what they're doing, but certainly not the medicos in this story.

It sounds very much like a letter of complaint and some few well chosen leaflets or pages on care of the intact penis need to be sent to that hospital.

This one from the AAP instructs that on no account should a child be forcibly retracted.

I can see why American intact children keep getting all these infections now, whereas those in non-circumcising cultures do not, it's so sad.

As a Registered Nurse I can tell you that when I went to nursing school nearly 20 years ago, the only mention of a foreskin was when discussing circumcision. The only thing nurses learned about the intact male was that elderly men had foreskin and they had to clean it. Hence all the negative publicity.

The ridiculous thing is that they don't think twice about caring for elderly women's genitals, which can be way worse IMO (especially if she is incontinent, if you get my meaning.)

Sadly, the times have not changed much since I was in school. It has been discussed on the boards that new nurses don't get info on the intact male either.

I can also add, I didn't get much of anything on breastfeeding either.

It's a sad state of affairs, no doubt.

I suggest your friend writes to the hospital and inform them that their staff are not current on intact care. With more intact boys in this country, they need to understand their staff needs to have the current recommendations, unless they LIKE lawsuits, that is.

The only way this is ever going to change is to get proactive and not let up!

BTW, is the little guy okay and did he have a UTI?

Thank you...

the baby does not have an UTI.. nothing.. but does have a bacterial infection. The have no clue why or what from or where.

OOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh... I forgot to mention.. this is another thing.. talking about writing letters.. I have every intent to do so on her behalf..

When the nurse (different one then above story) came in to take blood she poked the poor baby 3 times, 3 diff places.. and finally got it.

The kicker is.. they put a heplock (sp) on the outter side of his hand... before putting the lock part on, after filling the little viles for testing the blood was dripping all over.. the bed.. him.. the nurse... down her arm..

Kicker to this story is.. SHE HAD NO FREAKING GLOVES ON!!! ok, now I udnerstand he is a 7 month old baby .. BUT WTF.. HELLOOO babies are born with diseases and chit tooo.. and no gloves at all.. she had his blood all over both hands.. running down her arms to her elbows.. WTF!

The reason for the gloves is for the protection of both the health care worker and the patient. A doctor's office, hospital or other medical facility is the most likely source of a nasty staph or other infection. The leading cause of these infections is poor hand washing practices by care givers. I remember reading the story of a woman who was a nursing student and followed a nurse around all day. The woman did not wash her hands a single time that whole day. Any time you or a member of your family is touched by a care giver, you should see them wash their hands. If they don't, insist that they do in your presence for your own safety.

Ugh that is gross. Unfortunately I have seen it happen many times here in NC. What state are you in? They seem to be pretty lax about gloves and blood around here
Drives me nuts, and makes me wonder what other important steps get skipped over in patient care

OP I am glad you stood up for your nephew. My son was forcibly retracted during a cath when he was 6 mos old after I specifically told the nurse she did not have my permission to do it. I raised all kinds of hell afterwards and made sure the ER is now educated properly on cathing intact boys. It infuriates me to see the ignorance that people display about the NORMAL anatomy. They act like they have never seen an intact penis before, and that to me is disturbing.

This is EXACTLY what I am afraid of happening if I ever have to take my son to the ER! What can we have on hand to educate the staff? Or to prevent them from using a catheter at all on our son without them calling CPS for denying medical care for him? Is the Intact Care Agreement sufficiant? Options and choices please

It is just so sad that on top of dealing with the stress of having a very sick baby, we also have to fight incompetent ER staff to protect our sons
I've also had the don't retract argument with ER staff when I took my son in with a 104 fever and they wanted to cath. (I ended up doing a clean catch at home and dropping the sample off at their lab) From now on I plan to do the clean catch before going to the ER, so they have no reason to suggest a cath in the first place.

I can't believe they didn't wear gloves when they were doing bloodwork, and that they said that the baby's penis looks deformed. Sheesh!
: You guys should really write a complaint letter, and hopefully there is a different hospital nearby if you need to make another ER visit in the future. Hope the baby feels well soon
