This is one of those things that I just feel seems silly for Oprah to endorse. I have a hard time believing she's embraced voluntary simplicity and any organization her house has is probably due to someone she pays full time to keep it that way.

But I'm really glad to see Decluttering (and to some extent Simplicity) rather than just 'organizing' making it more mainstream.

While i can see how she wants to help people (after all that is what her show is about...) this kinda hits me in the same spot as her show about getting out of debt that aired here this week.

The people she had on that show had what I call 'luxury problems' and were very far away from the ordinary life of the people I have ever met. And we get around the globe alot.

I think she has left the relm of the common folk way to long ago to be able to relate to their lives.

I got the Peter Walsh book from the library & read it & think he makes some very valid points. First, to carefully consider AND discuss what you see the purpose of a given room ideally is to focus & solidify decluttering efforts. The only negative noted was that perhaps because he's from Australia he never mentions Freecycle as a swift, painless way to remove discards. I know from reading local boards here that people will take just about anything, items it's hard to believe anyone bothered to post, but they are swooped up. For someone with transportation issues, lots of small children, health problems or other reasons it's hard to get rid of your bags & boxes of junk so Freecycle is worth a mention imo.

Well, and they use helping people as an excuse to air what really gets ratings - others lives for people to gawk at. Why is decluttering a good topic, because we can all gawk at how shockingly messy someone's house is. Why is the debt thing good - becasue we love to gawk at how much stupid stuff this person bought, etc. The helping them is just the excuse that lets them air that - since people would feel too bad about scratching that itch if the whole show was just about leering at people essentially.

Ohhhhh....the Clean Sweep guy.....

He would have LOVED to have me on the show...I would be right behind him saying, "Trash is ALL" "All of it." DH is a major clutter-er.

And even though we were NEVER as bad off as people on the show, we did the same thing. Took EVERYTHING outside, and only what fit on the Queen sheet came back in. The excess went neatly into the garage. We did this room by room and when we were done we had a HUGE yardsale.

ah, this is all great advice. we are getting ready to move soon and will not be taking ANY clutter with us. Even though the house we are going to is a lot bigger I'd rather have an empty room I can decorate as time goes by then a lot of crap to fill it up with.

She had one like a year ago to declutter a little bit. It was insane. And I think it was only a small fraction of her things.
Anyway- there were tables and tables FULL of Jimmy Choos, Manolo Blahniks.. her employees got some great deals. I think she donated all the money to charity, which she should because I'm sure she got most of those things for free!

We do have Freecycle in Australia. Maybe his stuff was written before it became so popular?

Guess it depends on where you live, Stone Fence. Here there are occasional no shows but mostly it's a good deal, especially if you have porch or somewhere you can put the items & not have to be around to answer the door when someone comes to take them away.
