Dh is from Eugene, moved to Colorado to be with me when we got married. He really really wants to move back to Oregon. We are here on vacation now and I'm trying to covince myself that I could live here. We hung out in Eugene yesterday, took in the Saturday market and chilled with friends. It rained. :LOL

We're staying with his sister in Roseburg. I actually prefer the landscape down here, I think it's quite beautiful. Living on the front range in Colorado I'm accustomed to seeing the mountains and such...its one of my favorite things about living there...but in Eugene I feel like I'm caged in by all the trees. They have a small farm in Green and it's so idyllic!

The "climate" of Roseburg is a huge turn-off however. Since political discussions are off limits - I'll just leave it at that.

He's willing to live pretty much anywhere on the western side of the state....wants to be close to the coast. Anyone have any suggestions. I've decided I like southern oregon better - little less rain and the trees are there but just not so dense. Anyone from Ashland? Any other liberal enclaves in the south??

less rain in the south? hehe It's pretty rainy anywhere west of the mountain range.

I totally know what you are taking about with Roseburg. I grew up there. It is beautiful but not so uhh.. well you know you are there right now. :LOL

Ashland is great. Small college town lots of libral hippies an of course the shakespear festival. Small town Oregon you are going to have a hard time finding more libral people. The bigger cities are libral and the smaller the population the more conservative it's going to be. You just have to be willing to go looking for others of the same mindset.

I'd look into Ashland if you want to live inland and south, maybe Medford. On the coast I'm not sure, I've visited but never lived there. Newport and Lincoln City are both nice. Coosbay/Northbend is boring, Brookings is pleasent.

Of course if you are willing to deal with the "climate" in Roseburg, well Douglas County in general.. then it's a great place to live.

You might want to check out some areas North of Ashland. Grants Pass (50 miles North of Ashland) is a mix but is getting more liberal and a lot of neat people live in the surrounding rural areas. Last time we were there a old hippie woman was dancing on the street corner with her pro-legalization of marijuana sign, so it can't be too conservative.

i was going to suggest Grants Pass, too, although a friend of mine has a sister who lives there and the job prospects are not so great.

other liberal enclaves in the south... hmm... Eugene and Grants Pass are the two that I think of. It's not so south, but the Newport area on the middle coast is a little more liberal, too, albeit a summer beach town for part of the year.

peaceful space searching to you...

warmly,
claudia
