what do you use or recomend?
I have something eating holes in my squash plants (leaves)

the only thing I have on hand is some organic neem (spray) and pyola. would one of those do? if so, which would you use? also, should I spray the whole garden or just the affected plants?

I have a book somewhere around here about natural pest control. I need to dig that out..

in the meantime does anyone know what I can use for grasshoppers & locusts? they will be awful in another 2 months and eat EVERYTHING in site it seems!

is there anything (herbs, etc) I can plant around the garden to discourage pests?

advice welcome!

Have you seen the bug? Is it a cucumber beetle? If so, either one of those would probably work. I'd spray just those plants and any other curcurbits in your garden.

I don't know about grasshoppers and locusts. They don't bother our gardens here.

You could try planting Marigolds in the garden. We do this every year with good results. I'm sure others will have more good suggestions for you.

I was also thinking cucumber beetles, so you might be able to use food-grade DE (diatomaceous earth). It does a wonderful job on the beetles on our green beans and potatoes. Whatever you decide to use, be sure to apply it in the evening after the flowers are closed, so that you don't kill the pollinators.

I second marigolds around the garden. I actually had to resort to hair clippings and moth crystals to border my garden to keep the ever so persistent squirrels away. But, I had something(dont know exactly what, just saw the holes)eating my hollyhocks and I sprinkled regular old white flour on the plant(s) and they kept whatever it was away from them.

I have applied the neem twice..now waiting to see if it's going to work..everything is being attacked now! (except the tomatoes, zucchini and some various seedlings) so I may try the pyola too in a day or two.. it's just too weird as I don't see any insects at all!

I have some marigold seeds..I will try to get those down this weekend
don't insects dislike pennyroyal and basil too?

I dont know about them not liking basil. I have something eating giant holes in my basil and cant seem to figure out what it is. Cant seem to get it to stop or get rid of what it is either.
