Organics question

So............if you're going to 'go organic' but on a limited budget......what should you absolutely buy organic no matter what? I know meat and milk because of the hormones. Today I just discovered non-homogenized organic whole milk at the health food store I go to and dang is it better!

I have heard some fruits/veggies you can not because the peel keeps most of the pesticides and whatnot off the fruit/veggie part you'd eat anyway.

Help.

Here's a list of the most/least polluted produce. It's a good starting place, anyway!

amazing! I was just about to come post this question. thanks mamaE
oh, dear, potatoes? seriously? ugh! peeling helps, i guess? I don't feel like peeling! ~whine~

OK, things I didn't see on the list but am curious about:

raisins
peanuts and peanut butter
other dried fruit/fruit leather

I've always thought these were really bad to eat non-organic.

With peanut butter I always check the label to make sure that it only contains the necessities. Most commercial peanut butter has cotton seed oil in it and that stuff is SO toxic.
benjalo-I read years ago that raisins have a lot of pesticides even more so then grapes because it's concentrated as they are dried. I don't remember why that is, but I do know that imported grapes are supposed to be high in pesticides.

Does anyone know about the levels in beans like garbanzos and kidney beans. I have been buying organic beans but they cost quite a bit more especially when they aren't on sale. Thanks!

The worst thing about the 12 worst fruit/veggies is that they are still high in pesticides AFTER cleaning them. So, I'm assuming some has been fully incorporated into the "meat" of the item.

I would consider raisins to have the same issues as grapes.

Peanuts are not a fruit/veg so aren't on the list. Pesticides are esp heavy in the fats so I like to make sure to get fatty items (cheese, butter, peanut butter, etc...) organic.

The fruit leather would depend on the fruit that went into it, I assume. Most of them have an apple base. If you have a Trader Joes, though, around us their organic fruit leather is only .29 per piece (compared to their regular fruit leather being .25) which is about the best deal EVER.

When it comes to peanut butter always by organic and try to get some that is made from Valencia peanuts which are grown in New Mexico. Aflatoxin, a group of poisonous chemical compounds produced by mold, has not been reported to be a problem in that state due to the dry weather conditions. Aflatoxin is often reported as being found on peanuts .... not good!!!
