So, I've got the need to start a blog to go along with my new job (see Yaaaay!) and I'd like your input! This is mostly to motivate me to write every day as practice, but I'd like for it to be professional so that I can use it as an example of my work (plus, the better it is, the more I'll be able to shmooze and make connections).

There are three different topics I could write on, they are as follows:

-Crafting (Sewing, crocheting, embroidering, drawing, etc.)
-Writing (Starting a new career and have lots of things to write about)
-Journalistic (Day-to-day kind of thing-being pregnant and having a baby, being a SAHM)

I was considering making it all three. I'm worried, though, that if I do that the blog won't have enough focus to keep regular readers interested. To make it work that way I'd dedicate different days of the week to different topics. For example, I advance a week in my pregnancy every Thursday so I might dedicate Thursday posts to a pregnancy topic.

So, anyway, your input would be greatly appreciated!
(by the way you guys are awesome and I love having this place to come to for advice

i think making it all three is fine.

my husband started his as a sort of screenwriting blog--and he does talk about that topic--but now it's more of an everyday blog. he writes about his experiences--travel, daily, what have you.

i like his blog, and i like blogs like his. i like to know about things that people love to do with their days, with their lives.

My personal interest is crafting, but I've seen cases of blogs that include all three and they seem to work quite well.

I can think of three in particular, which you may already visit regularly, but just incase:

http://soulemama.typepad.com/
http://angrychicken.typepad.com/
http://twostraightlines.typepad.com/

They're all example of mamas who write about all three topics you mentioned and they are also published authors. Soulemama just released a book called "The Creative Family", which is very good, and Amy Karol of angrychicken published a book last year called "Bend the rules sewing". In their blogs they both talk about their families, crafts and the adventures of becoming authors. I think the mama from twostraightlines regularly submits articles to family magazines.

I enjoy Soulemama and angrychicken because they update their blog quite regularly so I always look forward to visiting their sites.

There's also Heather Bailey, at http://www.heatherbailey.typepad.com/ , but she can be a bit over the top for me.

I hope these give you some ideas. You'll also find a nice long list of similar blogs on the left hand side of twostraightlines' blog.

I like the idea of all 3, plus you'll always have material to draw from And just wait for the things you can write about once baby arrives!!
