It's thrush -- again. I will pick up a prescription tomorrow, but I need some relief right now.

My nipple is cracked and sore and hurts something awful. Can I put lansinoh or aquaphor on the crack or will it exacerbate the yeast? Is there anything I can put on for relief?

Thanks.

You can use OTC clotrimazole/Lotrimin cream (antifungal, usually in the athlete's foot section of the drugstore), which may offer some relief. Have you tried gentian violet?

Don't be afraid to take ibuprofen to control the pain.

Hope you're feeling much better soon.

Hugs to you Mama! Thrush is so hard to deal with !!!!

OTC Monistat cream helped me. Also, I took Motrin, 800mg at a time for the pain. It helped until my Diflucan kicked in.

Good luck managing this!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I feel better just from your support. A few questions

1. Do I wash off the athlete's foot cream before nursing?
2.How much acidopholus should I take?
3. My dr. usually only prescibes 1 dose of diflucan, but this is my 2nd bout of thrush.Any advise on gettinghim to prescribe a longer dose?
4. Baby has flucanozole and mycolog (for diaper rash). I'm waiting till I get the diflucn to start his flucanozole, right?
5. I'm doing the vinegar wash on breasts and bras, clothes, etc. Anything else I can do?

Thanks for all your support. My DH is really impressed, too!

You can wipe off any visible excess, but if it's been at least a half an hour and there is no visible (white) excess, it's OK to just nurse.

You mentioned that the baby has yeast diaper rash, too... IME a little vinegar in the bathwater and a longish soak can really help with this.

Sorry I can't answer your other [excellent] questions!

1. no - I used clotrimaderm which you don't need to wash off, just wipe off the excess. apply immediately after nursing, not before, that way most of it gets rubbed off on your clothing anyway. If I were using something stronger (than the usual 1% OTC cream) I might be a little more careful.

2. see: http://www.breastfeedingonline.com/yeast.shtml for dosages:
buy a brand of acidophilus that contains 6-10 billion live cultures

3. see http://www.breastfeedingonline.com/c...rotocalpdf.pdf
you can print this out and take it to your doctor to show him/her the appropriate dosage

4. sounds like a good idea, but I don't really know for sure

5. see: http://www.drjaygordon.com/development/bf/thrush.asp
If you can't get a proper scrip for diflucan you can try this GSE treatment. You can also wipe your nipples with water & GSE, or olive oil & GSE (olive oil is anti-fungal, and soothing). And add GSE to your wash.

Thrush sucks, good luck
