Ouch - one sided pain in the back and rib area - is there anything I can do?

I am concerned that my participation on this forum is being supervised and possibly used out of context in ways that can harm myself and my family. I really don't like going through and removing my posts (it is so isolating and sad!) but I am defering to something so very much more important right now.

Chiropractic? I saw a chiropractor every week or two for my last pregnancy and it really helped with back, neck, shoulder, and hip pain. I think it can also help the baby get into a better position.

Also, is it possible that it's your gallbladder? I had horrible upper right quadrant pain my last pregnancy from 4 months to the end and this time starting at 5 weeks. My dr said it was my gallbladder and did an ultrasound, but my gb looked normal. I did't have complete relief with dietary changes last time, but this time I have adopted the blood type diet (I'm type A) and it is working wonders. If I stick pretty close to the diet I am pain free.

Good luck mama.
How far along are you? I had a similar pain in my gallbladder/rib area with DS. It was horrible! Chiropractic did not fix it (though it fixed my SI joint). I would suggest some pelvic rocks and walking. I think DS got in a bad position because of how much sitting at the computer I was doing (writing my thesis). And that led to a reeeaally bad labor (not to scare you).

I also have had this pain every day for the last week or so. It's so horrid! It's right where I can't reach it too...when DH puts a little pressure on it, it feels better. Since I don't have a tub I can't try a hot bath

I have a really short torso, and there is really nowhere else for baby to go. Already, my tummy feels like it's about to explode because I'm so big...

I hope both our pains go away soon!

I agree with sunnygir1. You should see a Chiropractor. Chiropractic treatment is a form of physical therapy concerned with the functioning of your spine and central nervous system. Chiropractors assist you to maintain good health by leveraging the power of the human body to heal itself efficiently and naturally.

This physical therapy explores the connections between the anatomy of your spine and its effects on your health. Chiropractors diagnose and fix the source of your health issues.

Hope this help.
Just wanted to mention that pain on the right side, under your ribs could be your liver hurting, as a sign of pre-eclampsia. Have your blood presssures been okay?

Chances are it's not your liver, but I wanted to make sure you recognized that that could be a sign. I hope you're feeling better!

I had the same pain about a week and a half ago, it came out of nowhere and was so bad it was pretty much debilitating. So the next morning I called the nurse and explained to her, she had come in and give a urine sample and she said I had a uti and put me on an anti-biotic. (I didn't even get to see the doctor or anything, grrr!!)

Anyways, I took the anti-biotic, and the pain went away, even though it turned out I was allergic to that specific medicine and it gave me terrible hives for the past 3 days. Ahhh... it's been a long week and a half. But the pain went away... so thats good.

Long story short... let your nurse or m/w know about the pain your having at least and see what they want you to do, I don't think it's normal to have a really bad pain like that that is so consistent.
I had this pain while pregnant with ds and ended up having a massive gallbladder attack one week postpartum. Call your midwife or doctor about this.

I've had 2 pre-e pregnancies though and never once had the right sided liver pain. But the home health nurses really drilled it into my head everyday the last few weeks of my bed rest with DD about watching out for it so I don't think I could ever forget now.

Yes, please see a doctor or midwife and get your blood pressure checked! The thing about pregnancy-induced hypertension and pre-eclampsia is that it can come on fast, and you can still feel okay so it's really important to be monitoring your blood pressure and other symptoms (swelling, vision etc).

When I had PIH I felt sort of the same as what you are describing:

I've had low blood pressure before, so I know that light-headed feeling from sitting up too quick, but with high blood pressure I feel a sort of weird dizziness...it's hard to describe!

I hope your bp and everything is fine, and it really is just stress/fatigue wearing you down a bit!! Let us know how it goes.

Also, look into the fact that it might be costochondritis. I was diagnosed with this during pregnancy and it started out exactly how you described. Is the pain close to your sternum? Radiates around the ribs to the back? Does it feel swollen to the touch?

Mine didn't go away until after delivery. And honestly, living with that pain for 5 months, I'd sooner go through labour twice. lol.

Either way, I hope you find out what's wrong and feel better ASAP! ((HUGS))
I had the exact same thing with ds. It was a rib head that had popped out of place from the growing baby and it was excruciating!!! Chiropractic will help immensely, though my chiro had trouble getting to the spot once I got too big. Also IcyHot, or one of those heating patches that you can strap on and wear.
I've been checking for updates...I hope that everything is okay!

I guess no news was good news!

Sorry to hear you're still in pain! Hopefully your baby will shift position a bit so you're not hurting so much.

You could try massaging your torso/abdomen with some cream or oil. Put on enough so you can use both hands to glide in circles around your belly button in a clockwise direction. Use a bit of pressure especially around your ribs and solar plexus, but keep your hands flat. I do this when things feel tight, either skin or muscles. After your hot bath would be ideal!
I saw my mw yesterday about the same pain that you're describing. She said it is most likely a gall bladder thing as well. It happens to me no matter what I eat, though she said it is usually "fatty" processed foods cause it.

She said that apples were really great for it! I haven't gotten a chance to try them yet, but that is an easy remedy as far as I'm concerned.

Ohh, I use a rice pack heated up directly on the pain (usually before bed, when it is the worst) and it helps sooooo much too. In case you're not in the mood for a full bath.

Best of luck! I hope something helps for you!

I just want to reiterate that I had very limited success with dietary changes until I hit on the blood type diet. I followed that diet quite closely for an entire week before the pain stopped. Dietary changes take time and consistency...it's not as simple as having pain only after you eat a certain thing.
